I'm open to most stuff but some stuff like coronation Street is a big NO
I know i have to take insulin on every meal/snack there is. Is there any recommendations on snacks etc ?

Hi Duncan, my daughter was diagnosed in October, and she tends to snack on almonds, cheese strings and pepperami , which all have zero or minimal carbs so need no insulin. She also seems to get away with a bag of Quavers which have 9.9g carbs per bag, or a very small apple or pear. She only gives herself insulin for snacks over 12g and this seems to work for her. We are still in the trial and error stage!

Welcome :)

What insulin regime are you on? Have you been shown how to,carb count and adjust your insulin to match what you eat?

Thanks for that sadsocks :3 I'll have to try that :) and technically as so close to where I found out I'm (honeymooning still) , so it was originally all just 3 insulin for both 12 and 4 hour . Gone up to 5 before meals to counter act the carbohydrates I've been having . I've got an appointment tomorrow think I'll be shown more details .

You might also like to get the book Think Like A Pancreas :) It's very popular here - and for good reason. It's title is also a perfect description of what you need to do.

It sounds like you haven't been shown how to count carbs. Do,push to be shown as soon as possible. It's not hard and it's crucial for good control.

If you don't know your insulin units to carbs ratios, then you're better sticking to no carb snacks for now, but as you gain more knowledge, you can be more flexible in what you eat :)

Hi Duncan. - Welcome - Been T1diabetic for just over a year and took a while to get out of the Honeymoon period, during that time blood sugar levels were all over the place - you are right with regards to taking insulin based on meals and snacks etc however it all depends on the amount of carbs etc you consume and what your blood sugars are like before snacking and how your body reacts to the carbs you eat etc - discussing with your DNS should hopefully clarify things a lot for you and also the book 'Think Like a Pancreas' which is quite an easy read and informative. A lot initially is trial and error, I personally refrained from eating any snacks during the day and just had my three meals per day - reason being is 1) As I take Novorapid as my bolus -this lasts for approx. 4.5 hours, I wanted to establish as exactly as I could, how much insulin I needed to take for my meal. I found it easier not to snack and have my meals 5 hours apart - this made it easier to calculate my insulin to carb ratios (ie the amount of insulin needed to cover the carbs in the meals). And 2) there is a less chance of what they call overstacking on my insulin which can lead to low blood sugar - this can happen if you snack and take insulin but fail to account for any insulin on board if you have your meal shortly after snacking (hope this makes sense). I'm sure your diabetes educators and DNS will be more than happy to help explain things for you and any queries you have - this forum and the people on it are a great source of help and support:-) - I found the help and advice on hear invaluable... I still do !!:-)

welome to the forum @ANDuncan!
totally agree with @azure on the book recommendation ( and the other advice too )

remember it is early days and to treat yourself with kindness as the D lasts a long long time !!

Echo the choice of book is very easy to read and informative. There are some online course too, of you Google BERTIE with diabetes you'll find one that's really upto date. Take care and good luck
