Diagnosed Prediabetic

Hello All,

Im after a bit of advice, i was diagnosed pre-diabetic at the beginning of the year and after some advice.

I have been measuring my blood sugar levels and they go between 5.4mmol/l and 8.6mmol/l even though im getting my weight down slowly especially with el lockdown.

I have also been suffering from falling asleep unbeknown to me, but it was the same at my desk where id just sort of zone out and then come back and continue from where i was, at home now whilst working from home im doing the same, although with a more worrying side effect of my head jerking back to keep me awake (and hitting my head against the wall or radiator) and /or still falling asleep for about 10 minutes then waking up not knowing ive been asleep...

Any advice would be gladly welcome..

Are those after meal levels?
It would help to know pre and post mealtime glucose levels, as an increase of over two whole numbers might indicate that you are eating too many carbs. You might not be anywhere as bad as I was, but the drifting off is rather concerning.
Personally - although I started off as a full blown diabetic, I wanted to keep my levels below 8, and once I achieved that I kept to the same meals and saw the levels go down and down again, and my Hba1c was normal again.
What is a typical daily menu?

@Resurgam

Thanks for your reply.

Ill try and take the readings today both post and pre meals to see what the difference is

I am monitoring my Carbs and Calories and am trying to keep under 100grams of carbs in the MyFitnessPal app,

My Food Diary for yesterday was:

Breakfast - Mackerel 3 egg Omelette

Lunch - Prawn Salad with Crispbread

Tea - Lasaagne

Snack 5 x Milk Chocolate Digestives (my cheat after the umpteenth conference call)

Drinks - decaf coffee with semi skimmed milkand Rubicon Black Cherry (zero sugar) and 1 x zero alchohol heinken beer

Total Carbs - 151grans

Im trying vary my meals a bit, otherwise ill get bored

I think the lasagna and crisp bread were probably worse for you than the biscuits, believe it or not. Then again, if you're using Carbs & Cals, you're probably already aware. And there's more carbs in Heineken 0.0 than in their regular beer. (About 12 grams per bottle). Better to use full fat milk rather than skimmed, too. Could be you consume more carbs than you think, maybe? Fluctuating blood sugars can certainly cause fatigue and sleepiness, maybe experiment with, say 70 grams of carbs or less for a week, see whether that makes a difference?

Hi JoKalsbeek,

Thanks for your reply, i am trying to get down a lot on my carbs, and trying to resist temptations with boredom after work... I will get some full fat milk when our 4 pints have gone

Today my measurements go from 5.0 to 7.7 mmol/l and didnt realise id fallen asleep around 4pm.. with 90 grams of carbs today and working towards your recommendation of 70 grams.

Well, if you eat out of boredom, try getting some low to no carb things to snack on. Cheese, olives, pork scratchings, boiled/deviled eggs, extra dark chocolate... You could google keto fat bombs and knock yourself out with those, plenty of variety if you don't mind some time in the kitchen. (They freeze just fine, usually). And you could just get double cream instead of milk, does excellent in coffee too. In any case, there's plenty of options.

The 7.7 is unwelcome, but still one heck of a lot better than it could be. Falling asleep'll be an issue for a little while longer, I think, but you'll get there.
