Hi, My husband was diagnosed today with type 2 with his blood sugar levels at 311. We have read loads on diabetes but can’t find out the answers we really need! Is this slightly high, bad, really bad? We feel he has had it for quite some fine without realizing. He doesn’t really eat anything sugary, he’s not really a sweet kind of person Definitely a savory guy! How long will it take for him to get it back to normal? Loss of questions really but this will be a start. Glad I found this site!!

Hi and welcome

I’m assuming that the 311 was a fasting or random blood glucose test in mg/dl? That would equate to 17.3 in mmol/l, which is the standard way of recording in the UK. It’s pretty high!

Has your husband been prescribed any medication? Knowing the answer to that will help people to give appropriate advice. It would also be useful for him to know what his HbA1c was (if it was measured). That’s an estimate of blood glucose numbers over the previous 8-12 weeks.

It’s possible to get down to non-diabetic numbers from a high starting point. My own HbA1c was 108 (12%), which equates to an average blood glucose of around 16.5 mmol/l (297 on the scale you’re using). That came down to non-diabetic numbers in about 8 months using only diet (very low carbohydrate intake).

You’ll find a lot of help here, but in the meantime you might find this helpful: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.17088/

It isn't about the sugars in the diet - the glucose in the blood comes from carbohydrates, so starches such as things made from grains, or potatoes and other starchy vegetables and some fruits, along with sugar of course, but they all end up in the blood.
The best way to start would be to go through the foods for atypical day and calculate the amounts of carbohydrate consumed.
Once you know where they are coming from you can remove or swap for lower carb options.

Hi there. You will probably find his savoury food is equally likely to raise his glucose levels. As already said, it's all about the carbs, I take MORE insulin for an apple for example or a pastry encased delight than I would a tube of fruit pastilles!
