Diagnosis Of Type 2

Hi folks,

I'm an atypical type 2 diabetic, and would like to get an idea how many others there are out there like me! I was diagnosed incidently at the age of 27 - my HbA1c was screened as part of an immigration medical and picked up as being elevated - 45. I'm 5ft 6in, 60kg and at that point had a very physical job, was running 3.5 miles 3-4 times a week and was eating a fairly 'normal' diet. Over the next 3 years I changed little, and my HbA1c was checked every 6 months - sitting between 42 and 48 throughout this time. My GP then embarked on some deeper investigation - did a 2 hour glucose tolerance test which confirmed me as diabetic, and tested negative for LADA and MODY. I then started on a very low carb diet for 3 months, brought my HbA1c to 37 but lost 4kg meaning I became too thin. I've now settled onto a low carb diet for the last 2 years, my HbA1c sits around 35, weight steady at 60kg. I've never been on any medication.

I'm aware approximately 10% of type 2 are non-obese, and that there are others diagnosed type 2 in their 20's but i would love to get an idea of how many are out there. I was incredibly lucky to have mine picked up by the immigration medical screen, and am very greatful to know now that I need to watch my carb intake, as I would have had no idea otherwise!

So for all of you out there who are willing to share, how old were you when you were diagnosed with type 2, and what were the cirumstances that led to your diagnosis?

Thanks!

Hi. That would be me I'm 6ft 3 inches weigh 75 kg and have a 32 inch waist. According to the nhs charts I'm a perfect size. Sadly I'm carbohydrate intolerant. I was diagnosed on my 60th birthday check ups.

I’m afraid I was a fairly typical Type 2 when diagnosed fat, unfit and unhealthy with a serious carb addiction. Now I’m not so fat, but still unhealthy and unfit without the carb addiction although caffeine seems to have replaced it. I now have a serious bacon habit as well as a need for double cream and have been known to eat butter dipped in sea salt. What a great way of life this is...
