HI TO ALL, i was diagnosed26 years ago, and got basically no help, the diabetes nurse, gave me a load of syringes, and a couple of viles, showed me once what to do , then told to practice on an orange, now its different, no more mixing and using syringes, now use prefilled pens, but got letter from gp saying going to change my meter & strips without even consulting me. then i get told got to to check for keytones but not told why, or what level to check for.am i at risk , do i only check for them if sugars are to hign?, and whats to high? anyone help?

Hi,

The letter from your doctor is probably about prescribing cheaper test stripes as part of a "standardisation" scheme & cutbacks on NHS budget..
There is lots of information & discussion on here about it. Though I haven't been affected by it in my area...

Keytones.. Information about it here.. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-and-ketones.html

Sugar testing? Blood sugar levels? You should constantly monitor your levels to help manage your diet against your Insulin dose. Or visa versa...?
Ideally before eating and a couple of hours after to get a gauge on maintaining a consistent healthy blood sugar level..
Information here.. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

I was initially told ****** all too... Apart from l"ay off the sweets" & "don't let the pee in the chemistry set turn orange!"
Yep, it's a "balancing act" one which I've been doing for 38 years... Welcome to the circus!

I hope these links help..

As far as I know all the meters out there are at least good if not very good. My surgery changed us all to the MyLife Pura last Autumn for cost reasons and it works fine. Why your surgery should suddenly talk about ketones with you seems strange and looks like someone following a rule book. If you eat sensibly with low-ish carbs and measure at the right times you should never experience ketones at a level that is anywhere near dangerous

Hi Tawsy

You only need to check ketones if your blood sugar is above 14.

Can you ask your doctor to send you on the DAFNE course? That will update you with many of the changes in diabetes management in the last 26 years. It really helped me get up to speed. Then you can learn everything else from this forum! ;-)

Miraculously sent via Diabetes Forum App. Probably on the 4th or 5th try :-/
