Diary of a diabetic

Day 1 - 20/02/16 - 4:45am

So this is my attempt at getting control back over my diabetes and my body, I'm going to post here as often as possible and tell you all about my progress! I'm not going to let diabetes win.

So yesterday I was asked to visit my doctor on Monday, I'm getting blood tests for a couple of things, mainly Hba1c though, sorting out my care plan which should of been done a long time ago lol (I'm lazy)!! Getting an eyesight test, etc. gonna be a long day!! See the problem is, the doctors can't figure out what it is, if I'm a type 1 or 2, but we are thinking more along the lines of T1, only more tests will tell! I'm taking insulin (I'm lying really, I "should" be taking insulin) but I'm supposed to be on humalog at meals and lantus at bed, my levels currently struggle to go under 20mmol (whoops), they used to be okay, now I can't get them down! But I'm not going to let my diabetes control me any longer! I'm the one that's supposed to have control! I'm 17 I have a whole life ahead of me, nows not the time to let it slip!

Hi there, well done in deciding to get it under better control. Loads of helpful stuff on the forum. You know how to start, you already said it, start taking the insulin properly, ask perhaps for a different type.

Had a low last night, so woke up to a 10.4  but I am calm and I didn't shout at my meter ;)

Day 1 continued- 20/02/16 - 7:40pm

Levels shot up to 28 after dinner, (didn't check them at all today woops) so I don't know what they were before, but that's all apart of my journey to start doing the right thing and test when I should lol. A year ago today I was diagnosed, not a very great anniversary haha, will update later :)

Just about to sit down for Lunch and have myself a Sunday Dinner. I know it isn't Sunday but I have work tomorrow so I think having it a day early is acceptable :) My sugars are at a nice 6.0 here's to hoping they stay that way ;)

Day 1 continued- 20/02/16 - 11pm

After a big dinner that put me to 28, 20 units of insulin later I've re checked and I'm down to 9.5!!
I know it's still not perfect but for the fact I'm averaging around 20-30 every single day it certainly put a smile on my face, given myself a few more units in hope that I can bring myself to a healthy level :) here's to hoping it goes well!

@Sammiexx, has your doctor given you the GAD and ICA tests yet? They will determine whether you are autoimmune T1 or not.

I'm not actually sure which tests I've had but two of them came back and gave signs of both which really confused them

Day 2 - 21/02/16 - yesterday

Was quite an up and down day, woke up at 15.9 and couldn't seem to get myself lower no matter what, but kept going higher and back down all day, all though I must say being under 20 I do feel a lot better than I have been lately! Can't wait to see how I feel when my levels are healthy!

Day 3 - 22/02/16 - 1:40am

Blood tests today! Getting hba1c, cholesterol check up, thyroid, liver function test, etc. nervous! I'll update when I'm back :)

Day 3 continued- 5:11pm

Blood tests all done! Ouch! Get my results next Monday as well as another doctors appointment, my insulin units have been changed back to 10 units of lantus at night, and 6 units before meals, as my doctor wants to monitor me, I think it's a bad idea though as that is extremely low units for what i was taking, I booked an eye sight test for Monday too, hope everything's okay :)

Hey Sammie, well done for doing this, your body will love you for wanting to look after it !

I am on a pump now and last week I had a bad infusion set and went up to 26mmol/l during the day, I normally run below 9 so this made me feel very unwell and even the next day I felt bad, so I can only hope that when you start getting better day to day results that you will notice how much better you feel mentally and physically. I know it takes some effort to get it right, but once they come down it will be so much easier for you to manage, yes we all have blips and can hit high numbers the trick is to not set too unrealistic targets and to be kinder to yourself if you're not getting it right, there are so many factors that affect control that if you can get your doses right that it will be easier to understand the other factors that affect control, such as stress, exercise, sleep, heat, hormones etc etc.

Keep posting, would love to see how you get on ;)

Hi again, @Sammiexx, I've just been rereading your posts, and I hadn't realised your age prior to now. As you are young, and going on your photo, you look like you probably have a normal BMI, there's also a possibility that you have one of the other forms of Diabetes if they aren't seeing any positive results in the antibody tests. The details of those are available here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-types.html
