Several years ago I went on the Atkins Diet and found it easy to stick to (fried breakfasts and lots of chicken and red meat). Is this the sort of thing I should be doing now? Ok, obviously not fry ups, but grilled bacon, poached or hard boiled eggs, etc?

It seems there are various schools of thought on the best diet for a diabetic. I suppose an important factor is what are you hoping to achieve? Is it for weight loss in the short term or a permanent change to eating habits, is it just BG you are trying to control or also blood pressure and cholestrol?

I suppose in a round about sort of way I'm saying that every individual has a diet that suits them.

Thanks Helena.

At 17 and a half stone (male aged 48 and 6ft 1inches talkl) I need to lose weight and also get my BG down from 16.

My blood pressure wasn't too bad at 140 over 86 and I've no idea what my cholestrol level is.

Having spent a few hours reading this forum I guess I'm gonna have to get used to crunching numbers.

As they say in sales "know your numbers"

If you want to lose weight AND reduce Bg numbers the best first step is to reduce your carbohydrate intake and your portion sizes. A little light exercise, say 30 mins a day also helps. Nothing too strenuous, just something that gets the Heart pumping ! You should soon see some improvements in both areas. .

Using that method, plus Byetta I have lost over 5 stone since January 2009. So it can and does work. NO, I do not low carb, before anybody asks or assumes....!

It's ok Jim, you would have to have been here for a while to know what that is about ! This forum has a very colourful history at times. :D
