Diet and exercise followed by Medication

Hi All,

Apologies if I am asking stupid questions here but I was diagnosed with Type 2 just over a year ago. In this time I have lost 4 stone, picked up the exercise and my blood sugar levels are on average in the 5.3 mark. I have just had my yearly review blood test and I'll get results on Monday.

Although I have managed my blood sugars quite well there are certain parts of the diet that I am struggling to maintain. For instance I have found no bread I can eat (tried burgens). I'd also like to have some brown rice. It seems like no starches no matter what amount and tried with all combinations don't agree with me.

Is it feasible for me to ask to go on medication? What does it actually do? I don't want to use it to eat everything I want and intend to keep an eye on my diet but adding the things that I miss.

Any advice as to what I should say to the nurse?

thanks

Thanks Netty,

Unfortunately, I have tested every bread and tried to combine it with the all the food groups and still no luck. I'm wondering what the medication actually does and what implications are there for starting to take it.

Im no expert but the Best thing is ask your DN I usually have a list of questions every time I go lol or someone on here will probably know the answer I am still a newbie to it all

Good luck

Surely the best position is avoiding medication.
Why would you want to medicate just so that you can eat bread? If you follow that argument to absurdity you would take an antidote so that you could imbibe some particularly tasty poison.
Your body doesn't like carbs - just accept it!

Personally I love bread and pasta and museli and lots of things which raise my BGs, but they are bad for me, so I have given up carbs completely in order to avoid medication - apart from morning porridge which I know I'm going to work off by lunchtime anyhow. I know that this is right for me so that is what I will do, I cannot understand why I would want to do anything different.

Hello,

I would like to avoid medication at all all costs but I am very bored with my diet. Yes I would like to have bread, I miss it. I exercise alot, have lost lots of weight and I take good control of my blood sugars.

I wondered what implication that the medication takes? Pro's/con's?

thanks

You needn't be bored with your diet. See all the ideas on the low carb forum, and this

and anyway shouldn't your health come first? Medication is for those whose health would be worse without it. It's NOT a lifestyle choice!

Jackjo how bad does a small amount of bread or rice spike you?
I'm a T2 I work out 3 times a week and low carb most of the time, and have recently found i can actualy eat small amounts of bread, rice and pasta without any problems at all, the trick that works for me is to balance the small amount of carbs with lots of veg protein and fats, congrats on loosing 4 stone and working towards your bg of 5.3 :-D

Thanks for all your comments and reassurance. I think deep down I proably haven't done the work of mixing the food groups very well. I found foods that didn't spike my BG's and stuck to them. A small selection.

I'll get back to my experimenting.

Thank you again

I am newly diagnosed Type 2 & have found cutting Carbs works well for Me...I sympathise however as i can still have a slice of Burgens I tend to make an open Sandwich & I also have Porridge Oats some morning with a small portion of frozen Berries. I find the smaller portion is easier to tolerate. I purchased a book on Amazon the Big Book of Low-Carb recipes by Nicols Graimes after reading the reviews & I now feel a little better as I know my diet will be a lot more varied. I see the Dietician a week today so maybe some ideas from Her
