I only drink Pepsi max and have done for years. I have the odd glass of water but that's it. No problems here

Ah I have been doing this for nearly 20 years :)
I used to use the pee sticks when I was a kid, now I can normally tell, but when it's from a tap and they don't tell you if its Pepsi or coke I'm less sure of myself, and I wear these now

to try and make people think, and make sure I try the drink at the bar as it has happened sooooooo many times! And the 'can you reaaaally tell?' thing is getting boring... But the 'I kind of need to, I'm diabetic' face reaction and over apologeticness is always fun!

I've been reading this thread and actually sitting here thinking ***?I've been diabetic for 23 years in those 23 years I don't think I've ever drank a full sugar juice thinking it's diet the times this has happened too me I work it out within 1-2 mouthfuls.you have to be kidding, right??

I actually design and manufacture the equipment that is used to test our blood testers :) and it's also used to test the sugar content in various things including drinks, so it doesn't surprise me that you can do this on your meter, although I've never tried it myself :)

I totally agree Nicola, you can normally tell the difference however on one occasion after stating I needed diet about 5 times she still gave me full sugar and just said it was diet, thinking that I wouldn't know the difference.
After this confusion at the bar I then thought I might just be paranoid and imagining it could be sweeter. Drank the full drink and went on to feeling extremely ill.

From that experience I then started to experiment with my glucose meter and therefore discovering this trick.

It could save people a little bit of paranoia and let people relax if they know for 100% they have a 0 sugar drink.

Mikey
Hello Mikey, your post about being 'porky pied too' about your drink is not isolated, as in a past life I had to tell a bar staff person, that they should not do the 'telling incorrectly' thing, as the person may be a diabetic and full sugar drinks could make them ill. If no diet on the post mix unit, tell them and offer a bottle of diet from the fridge, don't let me hear this again I told them.

This type of stunt is dangerous, and should be reported, not only to the licence holder, but also to trading standards, as this is misrepresentation of the product.
Just to make a sale of a soft drink is wrong, and being rude to the customer by not listening and taking notice, is unacceptable, ttfn from Karen

this reminds me of that coke zero campaign where they reveal it was zero after the customer drank, imagine you are having a hypo and they play that trick on you..

Well done Stevo - you must have a really good taste! But not everybody has your tongue.
Some people may have just been diagnosed - some people might have anxiety over these sort of things. I know some people who only prefer bottled so they can physically see that it is diet.
So for the times you are unsure or do not have a bottle/label, I simply shared this trick to ensure the drink is what they say it is.
There is no need to be negative and to be "sat there like ***?"
Support each other and learn.

Thank you for your reply.

Hello Mikeyluiz and ono, and every one else who has the right drink to consider.
The testing with the blood sticks or wee sticks is a great idea, but me I always forget things and these would be one of them. Also as I don't go out socialising then I have to say I don't have them problem.
I did try the coke in the green labelled bottle and that tasted ok, it was at home, and the trick they pulled on full sugar coke drinkers, tried to show the non sugar versions are just as good as the very sugary one, trying to help the overweight problem? in their own way!, ttfn from Karen

Hi, This is my first post, so treat me gently...!!!
I have been reading this thread with great interest! I was diagnosed T2 last year just after going on holiday to Tenerife. We were All Inclusive, so I spent the 10 days drinking what I assumed was Diet Coke from the various machines around the hotel. We are returning in July and now of course it is important that it actually IS Diet Coke. This has got me worried. I'm now thinking that if I don't tell the difference I could spend my whole time glugging down spoonfuls of sugar! I know the easy way is to just drink water, but I've given up lots and a glass of Diet Coke keeps me sane!
Can anyone recommend something I can buy online to take with me? I've read possibly urine dip strips?
I'd really appreciate any advice....thanks.

Someone needs to petition for PepsiCo and Coca-cola and other drink companies to stop putting aspartame in their drinks if there really is a possibility it causes that many things, since I drink fizzy drinks all the time, my eyes are continually blurry, low motivation to control diabetes and sometimes minor hearing impairment along with depression on top of the chronic depression I have, many times I drink pepsi max I can sort of taste the difference from still/sparkling flavoured water for example, I can sort of feel a difference in my body, and when I don't drink it, its like getting out of its withdrawal like its some sort of drug.

Another trick I learned was to rub a few drops of the drink on the back of your hand wait a minute as it evaporates, if the back of your hand is left feeling sticky = full sugar, no stickness = sugar free. My clinic always downloads my meter so this means I don't have to explain away the 1's and 25's!

Cold weather, angry people, queues,
Yes Noblehead them drink dispenses are not to be trusted it's all done so quickly in bars and clubs and I don't suppose the bar staff really care if their if they are hitting the coke or diet coke button, a couple of times i've had unexplainable highs other than being served the wrong drink.

I can't actually taste the difference between normal coke and diet coke but I suppose after 40 years of drinking no sugar drinks [can you remember coca cola tab the early sugar free coke] and only full sugar in an emergency i have just got used to it.

...Aspartame... It also increases insulin resistance in T2's because the body is fooled into releasing more insulin because of the sweet taste...
I am sorry, but that is simply not correct.

Same as you Stevo, after one or two sips I can easily tell if its diet or the full fat version with taste I got of Coke/Pepsi.
