diet drinks awareness

I'm hoping that Dan won't mind me giving this link to the Diet Drinks Awareness campaigh on facebook. I think that this one is something that we can all agree with.
It's aims are:
1) A better selection of diet soft drinks, which benefits everyone, not just people with diabetes

2) More care and attention when serving diet drinks.

They have only been going a few days but are very enthusiastic. I know from postings elsewhere that they are thinking of ways to develop the campaign, to attract publicity and also to get the message acrossof the potential dangers of serving full sugar drinks to people with diabetes.

sadly it won't help me. Where I live, I'm lucky to be able to find diet coke in a bar and never at the local fetes. In the summer I often end up nursing a glass of fizzy water.
 
I find that mixing unsweetend squash with sparkling water is great for me....so many different flavoured squash so I am never ever bored. With sparking water at 10p for 2 litres in the major supermarkets its a great saving too.

Havent been able to touch the diet drinks for years.
 
Unsweetened squash is fine at home I agree, and there are a wide variety of flavours available here. I think the campaigns more about being able to buy diet drinks when out and or course the risk of being given a non diet drink.
 
I have to say that before I was diagnosed as Type 1 I very rarely drank Coke (unless there was a Malibu in it!), but now when I go out all I can drink is Diet Coke as most bars don't serve any diet drinks but this. And I can only drink so much in an evening!
I've actually said that I'm thinking of setting up a company that supplies diet drinks to bars!!
I've also worried that having asked for Diet Coke that as it usually comes on draught , how do I know that it is Diet, or if someone else is buying you a drink, have they remembered that you asked for DIet Coke, or did the bartender hear correctly!

What I would like is a diet version of J20 or similar!

Sainsburys - Basic sparkling water 10p for 2 litres - tastes great
Sainsburys - Basic Diet Lemonade and Basic Diet Coke is good as well. 2 litres has just a trace of carb in it.
 
You can also buy 10p water in Tesco's. I buy the sparkling regularly, it is very nice, either with a mix or on it's own.
 
Couldnt agree more take Tesco.com for example you can buy all the Zero variety except bottles of LILT Zero. You can buy normal lilt in 2 litre bottles and you can only get lilt zero in a 6pack of cans :? Rages me that much I shop at asda just for juice lol.

I'm sure most bartenders would not be too worried if they dispensed the wrong drink when busy, after all they would not immediately think 'oh, this person is diabetic' they probably just think that the person ordering the drink is on a diet or is just making the healthy choice!!!!!

I always ask for a bottled mixer, diet or zero, and if non is available I would just stick to a glass of wine or a beer, at least I know what I'm getting then.
 
I'm with sid - stick to the alcohol :lol: :lol: - Really though the only way you can be sure is getting it in bottles - or smuggling in your own :wink: - reminds me of my younger,wilder student days when we would take small bottles of vodka to add to our coke :twisted: - now its the other way round :roll:
 

Thats what I drink now. Its much cheaper than any of the colas out there. I buy Asda's double strength squash and I drink it by the pint lol
 

Morrisons do a lovely apple flavoured squash. I love all the different flavours dont have an Asda near me but Co op own orange squash tastes like naval oranges.
 
I just enjoy the lovely water that comes off the hills and out of our taps!
 
Me, too. Isn't it so back-to-nature to have spring water!

But I have a question re the diet coke (with citrus? I think).

I have taken a liking to this. It worries me. I can't have Ribena any more and get tired of water or tea all the time. But I heard diet coke had bad things in it, as in: aspartame, perhaps. Is this true? I've never been one to drink coke, so it's not like I've been stoking up baddies for half a century, but I do just wonder because I have several a week now. What does anyone think?

There are others which read like it is a lethal poison, akin to Cyanide ! You have to make your own mind up about Aspartame and all the other chemicals found in many soft drinks. Do a Google/Yahoo search and sort the 'cranks' out from the factual stuff.

Personally I enjoy Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi etc and will continue to drink it whenever I feel like it. I know what's in it and I am not particularly bothered. I can have a soft drink without it affecting my Bg levels and I have never felt ill or been worried about drinking it.
 

I poured some coca cola onto a urine glucose test stick and it changed to a dark brown colour, when I tried it with pepsi max it didn't change colour at all. A dark brown colour on the test stick signifies a very high sugar level - 100 mmol/l and it's the highest reading the sticks I have can indicate.

I tried this with two different brands of urine test sticks and it worked with both of them.

This suggests to me that these sticks seem to detect sugar although they are meant to test for glucose, I'm not sure what the differences are between glucose in urine and the sugar in soft drinks but this test appears to work.

I am not sure if it's a good idea to dip them into a drink which will be consumed but pouring a small amount of the drink over the stick will stop the drink being contaminated with the chemicals which are present as part of the tests.

In case anyone's interested the test sticks I used are multi test dip sticks called 'Mission Urinalysis Reagent Strips' which have 11 separate tests on them.

I enjoy drinking diet coke, but I dont drink it all the time. Does anyone else find coke zero upsetting to their stomach? Tesco do a fab range of sugar free squashes (I'm currently sipping on apple and pear squash. yum) I'm not a big fan of drinking tap water, but when I wake in the middle of the night, extremely thirsty (which has been happenning a lot lately...?) there is nothing better than a large glass of Harrows finest.

When I was a student, I used to find that "vodka and diet coke" invaribly produced odd glances and a pint glass of diet coke. All of my friends know what I can and cannot drink which makes life easier, and the barmen at my local are also aware of my diabetes, (is that a good or a bad thing?? :wink:
 
Its strange but I can't really tolerate fizzy drinks now. I use to love diet coke and pepsi, or any other drink for that matter, but they now tend to make me feel bloated. At home I just drink sugar free squash, and when eating out and driving I drink mineral water.

I suppose in a busy, noisy pub it is easy for the bartender to not hear correctly, and give you normal full-sugar instead of diet, but I am not making excuses here for their occasional negligence.
