Hi all, someone said to me today that diet coke and diet lemonade only have nil calories but still high in sugar, is that correct?

No. It's absolute rubbish. (Thank God, I'm a diet coke addict. It's my only post-diabetes vice).

Diet Coke (or Diet Pepsi) have zero sugar and zero carbs. In fact it would be pretty impossible to have zero calories and any carb or protein or fat.

Same is true of Diet 7UP or Sprite Zero.

You need to be more careful of "low-calorie" versions, but the proper "Diet" beverages from Coke and Pesi are all zero carb.

Yum Yum Yum.

Hi,
Totally agree with above. No the info you were given is not correct. If you look at the "nutritional information" list on the label of each bottle you will see the "Total Carbohydrate" figure listed per 100ml. This is the overall amount of carbohydrate contained in the drink, either per 100ml or per bottle.

This is usually followed by "of which sugars" which shows how much of the total carbohydrate is made of sugar and will generally be a lower figure than the total Carbohydrate figure. (Only actual sugar would show the same figure in each section as all of the carbs in sugar are sugar).

The Total Carbohydrate is the important one to follow - it tell you how much carb there is in each 100ml that you will drink. In the case of Pepsi Max it is NIL (so there is no carbohydrate at all in the drink). I am sure that Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Diet Pepsi are all NIL in the Total Carbohydrate and so contain no sugar. If they did contain any amount of sugar it would be listed as "Total Carbohydrate" and also "of which sugars".

It is worth noting that some diet drinks do contain a lower amount of sugar than the non-diet version and also some can contain fruit sugars but will be marked as "No Added Sugar".

The nutritional information for Diet Coke:
http://www.coca-cola.co.uk/brands/categ ... -coke.html

Coke Zero:
http://www.coca-cola.co.uk/brands/coke-zero.html

And for Pepsi Max/Diet Pepsi:
http://www.pepsi.co.uk/Products/Default.aspx

Hope that doesn't make it too complicated. Basically, if the total carb shows NIL or TRACE it is sugar-free.

I just tried the Tesco own brand diet cola - at 18p for 2 Litres, it's damned good and 8 calories per Litre.

Just a quick question folks.

I gave up Coke, Pepsi and those type of drinks about a year ago when I was trying to cut out caffeine (don't ask!) and they don't appeal to me at all now although rarely I will have a diet lemonade or something like that.

I prefer weak diluting juices and have been buying Robinsons Fruit Juices, the no added sugar ones..I barely have enough juice to colour the water but am wondering if in normal quantities this is a ok-ish drink or should be avoided?

Hi

I also use Robinson's no added sugar but I like it diluted with diet lemonade (no carbs- I checked the bottle after reading this thread earlier). Robinsons only has 1.2g per 100ml which I thought was fine.

Would be interested to know if this is not alright to drink.

It just depends on how much you drink and to what extent you dilute it.

Unless you are glugging down gallons of it, or making it really strong, I don't think that it's a big source of carbs in your diet. For me it's preferable that glugging down half a pint of milk, which is my other (not so carb friendly) vice.

Just be careful with coke style drinks. I was diagnosed with an unusual heart rhythm (missing beat). I converted to decaff coffee and stopped drinking coke drinks and this fixed the problem!!

All the best - Steve

Does anyone else find that the low calorie / artificially sweetened / no added sugar version of a drink tastes sweeter than the standard version of the same drink? I have found this with different well known brands of fruit squashes and several fizzy drinks e.g Tango. I can't speak for Coke because I dislike the flavour and never drink it.
Is it because the manufacturers think that people buy these low calorie brands because they are fat. The consumer is fat because they eat too much sugar. They eat too much sugar beacuse they like an excessively sweet flavour, so the manufacturers oversweeten the low calorie alternatives to keep them happy?

Does anyone know of a no added sugar drink which does not taste over sweet?

Both Aldi and Asda do litre bottles of fruity flavoured fizzy water. It's got traces of carbs (depending on which flavour) but isn't overly sweetened. If you're missing fizzy drinks these are a good substitute. Asda'a are 4 for £1.50, Aldi's are about 48p a litre.

I drink Robinson's double strength no added sugar squash, as I can't drink water. Like Ladybird just colour the water really, and it's fine. The amount of carbs per day, even with 2-3 liters a day are negligible in such small amounts.

Sainsbury's do a double concentrate no added sugar as well.

Hi I find that Tesco Diet Ginger Beer, or anywhere in Scotland Diet Irn-Bru helps quench my thirst, I used to be on 4-5 pints of full fat Coca Cola a day (no wonder I contracted Diabetes!!)

I'm another Robinsons no added sugar cordial drinker. At 1.2 grams carbs per 100, which I assume is the undiluted rate, even strong drinks of it aren't gonna do much harm.

I'm a Pepsi Max addict. I recently read (here?) that although devoid of sugar, it can inhibit weight loss. The last two weeks have seen me drink less and less, (not through choice) and this week I dropped 4lbs so I've decided to go cold turkey and see what happens. Could be a simple coincidence as I've not been on fighting from recently.

It's never made me hungry.

Thanks for all your replies. Since I was diagnosed T2 a fortnight ago, I have been more careful about low sugar drinks. Although previously I used themoccasionally to keep weight / calorie intake down. I have found I get a bad headache after some drinks containing artificial sweeteners. (I don't usually suffer with headaches). My diabetic nurse didn't believe it was connected, but I have since found a lot of similar cases on the internet. I only happens with aspartame not the older saccharin sweetener.

It's a good point of course have it in place of the sugared version but try to keep consumption as low as possible
