@Pollyg3 is there a diabetes specialist nurse you could speak to? I feel the dietician is lacking in understanding.

Might be worth a chat with someone else to speed up the tests you're waiting for.

Take care.
:)

I don't think that dietitians do diabetes ....it's too difficult. I had a bit of luck with mine. When she said, "It's like doggies and bunnies racing round a track" my jaw dropped and I didn't hear a further word she said.

She gave me a piece of paper saying I had to eat carbs with every meal, it's in a filing cabinet somewhere.

The best dietician I got was one instructed by my endocrinologist to have a look at a low carb diet, I think she meant low GI!
Anyway the best thing she did, under instructions again, was point me the way to this site.
And she was really interested in how it worked because she wasn't sure herself.

I've had some right doozies over the last fifteen years. (Not one of them knew about full fat and saturated fats.)

I was told to eat baked spud and baked beans for my lunch! (Go figure!)

So was I, exactly that.

Last time I had a review (December) my nurse said I could come off the diabetes register. She was delighted with me.
We had a long discussion about diet, and she agreed that higher fat with low carbs was the right way to go and that I had shown this to be the case. As I was leaving, almost out of the door, she looked at me and said "but you are still eating plenty of bread I hope."

I think I win on points

I believe that we are opposites because I had to get my endocrinologist involved to stay on the diabetic register, so free prescription, eye tests, reviews etc.
And more importantly my test strips on prescription!
I really enjoy my appointments with the dsn!

Not exactly opposites. I declined the invitation to come off the diabetic register so still get 6 monthly blood tests and all the other stuff. Never had test strips prescribed though. :(

Hi @Pollyg3 I do hope you get some help really soon. I had my first visit to a dietician last week and was really happy with it. I was concerned but had taken a complete days food with quantities and totalled for carbs, protein and fats. I was surprised that she was happy with the fat being the highest by far and the carbs being the lowest. No suggestion to increase the carbs. Most of my carbs are from vegetables. The only suggestion she made was to keep doing what I am and possibly try a few different foods. My GP thought I had taken my weight loss too far but she said it was still within normal although at the lower end. My dietician was really interested in some to the latest research going on. Sorry I can't help you with LADA but just to say there are some more enlightened dieticians around.

I am due middle of June to see diabetic nurse don't think there is anyone else I can speak to on a good note my blood sugars are quite steady at moment following lchf and that's down to this forum and the info received

I would be inclined to report the dietician for giving out medical advice. She had no right what so ever to give an opinion/diagnoses on your symptoms.

@Pollyg3 Sounds like you are coping quite well if your blood sugars are steady. I'm type 2 but I got my control by using my meter and eating according to the readings. For now that's the best you can do. Do hope you have a better experience with your diabetic nurse when you eventually see her.

I think dn is ok n feel like she knows what she is doing she agreed low carb I check with meter on regular basis n know what spikes me it just activating that no one agrees n different advice

This website!

It was the only forum I found that gave me great advice about very low carb diet.
The really good knowledgeable posters who knew what was needed for my condition.

The problem is still with the home page though as it still advocates eating low GI carbs, which is absolute b.....!

I saw a dietician for first time last week, I told her straight away that I was now a t2 on basal bolus insulin, oh a bad diabetic was her reply. She had little digs and knocks at me the whole way through so feeling really small. She hadn't even asked about bs testing but suddenly said bet you're testing too much that will get you anxious, mum spluttered and said that I have to test before and during driving that is a legal requirement and I reiterated again that I am an basal bolus so have to test to check not hypo/hyper and how much insulin to give, yes she said as t2 you are testing too much doh!!

Sorry you had such a dreadful first experience with the dietician. If it was me...and it wasn't...the conversation would have stopped, an explanation of what she was doing that was so damaging would have been delivered and then we'd see where we got to.

Keep your chin up and let your encouragement come from this community. :)

I am underweight and the first dietician I saw was great she even gave me her phone number and told me to call if I had any questions or problems She had the GP prescribe a drink to add fats to my diet The next time I went she had been moved to work in the hospital and her replacement was useless ,she more or less sacked me I think she could only deal with overweight people not skinny ones like me That was 6 years ago and I haven't seen a dietician science !

I am wondering who is right about the diabetic diet The recent stuff on the news casting serious doubt on carbs and a move away from low fat towards a near carb free diet with lot more natural fats and oils in the diet I heard on the radio several days ago that Type 2 had previously been known as Carb Intolerant the situation acording to some csources seeems to be encouraging A Diet which starts with a full breakfast bacon eggs etc no cerials or toast and carries on in a similar vane through the day has anyone else heard of this and does it have benifits
