I have always had trouble breathing if my BG goes high. this doesnt happen very often but is a bit scary to say the least. I do have asthma and take meds for it. normally the asthma only really affects me in either humid or very cold conditions and sometime as an allergic reaction to animals or pollen and the like. But i get the exact same symptoms when my BG goes above ten but not always :? anyone else suffer from this.

I'm asthmatic too and I've never encountered the symptoms you've described. Have you told your GP or DN?

I dont get short of breath as such but do get tight chested/conscious of heart beat and have to voluntarily breathe. GP ready to put it down to anxiety due to newness of dx but I have asked for blood tests to rule out other things (anaemia etc).

I also feel quite lightheaded a lot of the time and am convinved it is related to changes in bg but it didnt even occur to me to check keytones as I thought this was only to happen when my bg meter suggested I test (16.8 or something).

Maybe its just your heart working harded cause the sugar is toxic to you if it is too high?

Mmm I tried to google this but can't see any links whatsoever :!: It could be that when your BG is higher you become slightly stressed and anxious. This in turn could trigger off your breathing problems :?: I know when my BG goes up I become extra stressed and suffer slight anxiety so this could be a possible connection.

I don't know anything about it, but had this thought. Ketones are excreted partly in the urine and partly in the breath. could it be the body getting rid of ketones?

Check out Kussmaul Breathing, that's a response to ketoacidosis.

I dont think it is ketones cause I tested this morning when I felt funny (like fake hypo symptoms).
Most of my pre meal sugars are below 7 and can be in the 4's pre lunch. On occasions like this morning when it was 5.6 pre breakfast I think it is the increase in bg which is making me feel too weird/causing breathing problems etc.

Am going to mention all to consultant cause on premix and the rapid bit on insulin in the mix is to my mind not 'strong' enough to counteract higher bg (was still at 11, 2 hours later) though intermediate 'background' bit of it seems to be fine as most pre meal readings and fasting bg are fine.

I had this once...many years ago, and my bg was so high I ended up in hospital. Not sure what caused rge breathlessness, but it was just like an asthma attack. What I did learn though was not to get into that state again!I had to have potassium drips etc. I nearly killed myself with my own stupidity. Don't be as daft as me, test your bg, and get it to a better level.
