I decided to try and make a shepherds pie, using minced beef with onions, tomatoe puree and a couple of stock pots. The topping is mashed cauliflower with cream and seasoned. Serving with steamed asparagus, fresh cooked beetroot and maybe picked red cabbage.

Does this sound ok?
TIA x

Sounds divine! We are having chilli with soured cream and loads of cheese! :p

Sounds good, but not my cup of tea. I'm having a fillet steak with loads of mushrooms cooked in butter, tomatoes, 6 or 7 chips and a slice of thin crisp garlic bread spread with mayo. Oh and of course, some red wine.

Could I have the recipe?

it was different but good, lets see how my BG reacts, was 8.9 fasting, breakfast 2 weetabix, skimmed milk, sprinkle of sweetner, cup of white tea with one sweetner and a spike in BG to over 14, lunch was 2 slices of seeded bread, with butter and 2 round pieces of pork luncheon meat and snackin on plain cashew nuts, BG before Dinner 8.1 lowest it had been in a while.

Sounds good; I've done something similar, but with mashed celeriac on top. Celeriac is a bit Marmite - you either love it or hate it - but I've also substituted it for spud in Gratin Dauphinois, with most acceptable results.

I'm cooking curry tonight: Thai red chicken curry as the main with aubergine, spinach and chickpea curry as a side dish (easy on the chickpeas :)) and blitzed cauliflower "rice" for me, real rice for Mrs hay-char and No 1 Son. Smelling good.....

Weetabix and cereals in general would spike most of us, as would probably two slices of bread.

The nurse at diabetic clinic said weetabix or shredded wheat is a good option for breakfast (obviously not a good option) however i have always loved cereal :(, was surprised that the bread didnt result in a spike

Last I looked weetabix was a high GI food. You may as well be eating crumpets or tapioca. It is commercially manufactuered, like shredded wheat which is also high GI, to give the impression what you are eating a lot of whole grain goodness with lots and lots of fibre.

Have a look at the table on page 5 of this NHS brochure: www.nhsaaa.net/media/104304/gindex.pdf

Your DN is a victim of marketing hype :)

Weetabix energy claim is misleading, rules ASA

Not my place to tell you what to do but I personally wouldn't go near the bread or the wetabix. I have those kind of spikes with bread and cereal too. Rice and pasta are also bad, bad, bad! Initially it felt weird, especially as I love bread, rice and pasta. Have a look at this website

For me it was a revelation! My fasting is between 6-7
By midmorning I'm 5.5
I swapped out cereal for bacon and egg or sausage and egg!
Let me know what you think! The guy who writes the blog is a proper doc. I have emailed him nd he responded quite quickly. Someone on this forum suggested it to me so I try to return the favour! I'm only on a 3rd of the metformin now too!

At the risk of provoking outrage :) I have porridge most mornings: 25g (dried weight) of oats, salt, a teaspoon of stevia, because I can't stand unsweetened porridge, and made with water (no milk). In conjunction with a cup of coffee and goat's milk, it raises my BG by round about 1 point after 2 hours. May not suit everyone, other breakfasts are available, your vote will not count but may be charged for, terms and conditions apply etc..... ;)

My porridge earlier on in the week caused a big spike :( although it was a packet ready made to which i just needed to add milk. think i will try the oats:)

Hey if you're lucky enough to eat it without a spike then fair play to you! I'm all for people eating what works for them! The op is spiking after starchy carbs hence my suggestion of lchf! @fionamarie have you thought about keeping a food diary? I did when first diagnosed. I also recorded my readings before and after food. It helps you work out what you can and can't eat.

I have just started posting my BGs pre meals between 4 & 5 after 5 to late 6s great I thought, until I checked my breakfast at 1 hrs instead of 2hrs. 1hr registered 11.2 I was shocked. I had had cereal (Granola) Yogurt, Fruit Juice & 1/2 an apple. although the apple may not have helped the small glass of orrange will be going but when I checked the carbs for 1 serving 50g on the granola it was over 30g so that will be going. I understand there about 8g on real porriage oats so I'm going top try that. Ready made could be anything but I believe they are well over 15g
