Disappointed with Hba1c [emoji848]

Hi,

I am quite disappointed tonight.

I have been doing the low carb diet for the last 6 months. I aim to have about 25g a day. I have in the main stuck to it and now I'm in the swing of things, I enjoying it.

I have been testing up to 6 times a day. I had calculated my Hba1c was 47, the MySugr app also worked out with similar at 45 (my meter is an accu check mobile )

At the beginning of the year my Hb was 69. In August I had got it down to 54. I was very pleased. Today I got the latest result and it was 51.

I realise there can be a small difference, but am confused as this was so different. I was on metformin until May but the side effects were not nice! I had hoped I could control it by diet. I am disabled so struggle to do any exercise as my mobility is very poor and wondered if this is partly to blame.

I know it is still going in the right direction but a tad p'd off.

Please don't beat yourself up..it's most certainly going in the right direction so you are without a doubt on the right track.
47 to 51 isn't a huge difference so I wouldn't be too worried.. Next time you'll get there I'm sure and if you are enjoying what you are eating what's not to like?
Give yourself a pat on the back and have a hug from me.

You might be able to get it lower by adding some more musclemass on your body, it has helped me a lot

You have done very well. Don't be too disappointed, remember another week and maybe your older, decrepit RBCs might have kicked the bucket giving you a lower A1c, who knows? Keep up the good work.

Hi @paula121s ... not sure how reliable these methods of estimating your HbA1c levels would be really. I'd advise you don't bother as it's obviously way less than accurate. I rely purely on my own meter to see what my blood sugar is at whatever moment I test (usually before and 2-3 hours after eating) and adapt my diet accordingly. I did record my readings and what I was eating for quite while at first until the patterns made things pretty clear. I don't really see any point in trying to figure out the HbA1c...only accuracy is the test itself. I also completely ignore the average readings on my meter as entirely useless. I think you need to pat yourself on the back for getting your blood sugar levels down from 69 to 54 to 51 in under a year (with no meds for about 6 months). You're only disappointed because the flawed method of guesstimating it let you down..abandon that and ask yourself if you are doing well. Your average level in mmols has dropped from almost 11 to just over 8. That's solid progress. Well done..next target should be getting under 48/47 and comfortably under 8. Good luck.

Hi @paula121s Well done on reducing your HbA1c from 69 to 51 in less than 12 months, an 18 point drop.
I only reduced mine by 10 points in my first year, and it crept up again by 3 points in my second year. It was disappointing, I was hoping to stay the same or get lower. But hey, it's better than where I started from, and yours is too.
I'm sure you will bring yours down further by your next test. Don't stress about it!

@Paula121, don't get disappointed. The BG meter doesn't give the correct results all the time. Mine was coming as 5.2% all the time, but the actual hospital test come as 5.7%. So keep on trying with your diet, you will one day get to your expected results.

Got to agree with everyone else. You've done really well in a short period of time. I found recording everything I ate helped me. I'm a MY Fitness Pal user (although I believe you record on My sugr too?). Before I recorded there were things that could go unnoticed.
Stick at it - you'll get there.
