Disappointing Hba1C Result

Hi All

I suspect this question or something similar has already been posted but I can't find it
Since being diagnosed with T2 approx 6 years ago I ignored NHS advice & went low carb. Since then my annual Hba1C has been in the range 34-38
However the most recent was 42 - wasn't expecting this especially as I'm eating the same diet, exercising as I've done for many years & my weight is stable. The only thing that's changed is I'm a year older
I'm baffled but assume I'm not the only person this has happened to
Any words of wisdom much appreciated

Howzat?
David

Hi there, I just wonder whether it's like everything else, you get older and your needs change so you have to adjust. Could you gives us a day's example of what you eat?, it may be just an extra tweak that's needed. x

I am always amazed at how my blood sugar responds to a) stress b) illness if that's any clue.
The other things that happens with age is loss of muscle so although you are active, are you building muscle? e.g. using weights for your big muscles.
To know if your blood sugars are reacting to food it may be worth doing some testing or even investing in a freestyle libre (constant monioring) for 2 weeks (circa £50).
However 42 is still pre diabetic and may return to normal next time it is checked so I would not panic just yet!

Back in the days when I used low carb to control my weight I thought something was going wrong when my weight started to rise for - apparently - no reason. I began to check everything I ate, and discovered that the change in packaging which had been fairly store wide at my usual supermarket had sneaked into my trolley three products which, although they looked almost the same, had greatly increased carb content.
More recently I met someone by the bakery outlet in Lidl who was buying the low GI rolls thinking they were also low carb - they were most upset.
It might be worth checking the back of the packets or online information.

Hi @Cricket_Balls,

Do you still keep testing blood sugars on a daily basis?

Imo, it's easy to experience carb creep and testing alerts you to this quickly, so that you can take corrective action.

Keeping my fingers crossed that HbA1c returns to normal at your next test.

You've got me thinking
My main thought is I'm an idiot.......!
I'll explain in a bit more detail later but
1. the low carb bread I've been eating has changed; I also have the occasional Lidl 'roll'
2. I've not been exercising quite the same - more cardio, less weights as I'm trying to protect a dodgy shoulder (my 'bowling' shoulder essential for playing cricket)
3. I don't test @ home: the freestyle libre sounds useful tho' not cheap
Great shame none of you live in/around Derby as you deserve a glass - or 2 ;) - of wine
Off to the gym to get shouted-at by the 'shoutiest spin instructor' I've ever met. You'd think butter wouldn't melt in her mouth: you'd be wrong!

Hi @Cricket_Balls,

Really regret not living close to you either, definitely would enjoy having a glass of wine with you. (Isn't it great that wine is still on the menu with low carb) ... but maybe if you are ever around my neck of the woods? I'm in the Cologne/Dusseldorf area of Germany.

Good luck on the proposed changes. I'm confident that they will get you back to where you want to be. Crossing my fingers for you and let us know how it goes.

My last was a little bit of a rise and like you disappointed (though I knew the culprits for mine). The positive thought I came away with was at least I know now that I do “need” to maintain my level of strictness and it’s not for nothing or excessive to my personal requirements or me being unnecessarily overzealous as a few around me at home had previously suggested
