Dizziness when standing up

Hi All,

I was diagnosed type 2 at he end of November 2012 so am fairly new to all this.

I've got my Blood Glucose levels under control, average 5.2 over 30 days, have lost 2.5 stone and got my BMI to 23.2.

For the past 4 weeks I have been suffering from short dizzy spells lasting just a few seconds when I'm rising from a crouching position or from sitting in a chair. I though this might have been low blood pressure but have tested repeatedly both sitting and standing and each time it falls within the ideal range. I saw my GP over this and she said it was dehydration, but I drink water at the recommended levels, don't have dry mouth or dark urine so am at a loss as to what is causing this, any ideas guys.

My daily medication is 500mg Metformin x 2, 5mg Lisinopril x 1 , 20mg Simvastatin x 1.

Your blood pressure might be normal but it's not uncommon for it to drop when you stand up too quickly. This could be causing you to feel faint. It happens to me sometimes.

Yup I get this if I stand too quickly! Have done all my life but have completely normal BP

Hi, I'm just behind you with everything (spookily similar) and am experiencing exactly the same for the last week or so!

Xedos - I meant to say before, massive congratulations on the weight loss!! Did you follow a particular plan to achieve that?

Thanks guys for replying and sharing your experiences, in relation to the weight loss as soon as my GP told me I had Type 2 I stopped, the sweets, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, fizzy drinks and sugar in my tea and on breakfast cereal.

I eat a lot more fruit, have adopted porridge as my breakfast of choice, cut back on the portion sizes and the fast food and ready meals. I still eat what I like just in moderation which is what the X-pert Diabetes course I attended recommended rather than deny yourself these things. The weight fell off rapidly in the first two months and then continued at a gradual pace I am still losing weight but just a couple of pounds over 2 weeks or so. I reckon I'll plateau soon, so time to put some exercise in the mix.

It's worked for me so far, I don't Carb count but I do test my blood sugar levels every few days to see if I'm on the right track.

Good luck to everyone.

Cheers,

Alan

I've lost a lot of weight, roughly following a similar diet to your own, and have various difficulties, although I call them novelties. One of them is dizziness or rather, was. It has been replaced now by a little loss of balance. The worst was a period of tummy rumbling. It wasn't so much a rumble as a sound not unlike too much air in the central heating system. It was as if liquid was rushing to fill empty voids. I'm awake at odd hours, have got aches and pains from muscles that haven't been used in years and have even taken an interest in gardening. I carry on out of curiosity, what next??

Oh dear. This is very serious indeed. Gardening shows loss of brain cells. I suggest you go and admit yourself to a psychiatric ward immediately!

Is Lisinopril not a blood pressure reducing medicine?
perhaps you actually just need your dose reduced?
I had my BP medication reduced recently, because I was getting these "Standing up" dizzy moments. It happens if you lose a lot of weight.

Hi hanadr,

Went specifically to see the GP about the dizziness with the same thing in mind, the Lisinopril ! but after testing for an inner ear infection, my BP etc she felt it was dehydration. Can't say i agree with her as I drink plenty of water as well as tea, coffee and sugar free juice. It hasn't been so bad the last few days so I'm hoping its a passing phase.

Cheers,

Alan

Does your BP drop when you stand? Even if it's in the normal range, it could still be dropping significantly.
You're supposed to sit for at least 5min, check your BP, then stand for 1 min & recheck. If the top reading falls by 10-20 or if the bottom reading falls by 10 it's significant, called orthostatic hypotension if you want to google it! It can be caused by BP lowering meds.

Hi VickiT11979,

GP tested my BP both sitting and standing and I've done the same since with no significant change. I'll have a google for Othostatic Hypotension I guess with 34 years experience as a T1 you know your way around the medication and its side effects.

Thanks for the heads up.

Cheers,

Alan

Hi have just read your post about your probs. with B.P. I have been taking the same meds.(Lisinoprol) since being diagnosed with Diabetes in 2007. Initially, I had tremendous problems with them making my blood pressure drop so suddenly without any warning. This is called postural drop. and like others have said, your B.P. needs to be checked from a lying position, then sitting and standing. I was really scared when this happened to me, and was not warned that this might happen. See your G.P. again, and hopefully you will get things sorted. Good luck. :) :)
