Do I have to take statins if blood sugar is kept in normal range?

I was diagnosed at the start of April this year with A1C of 97. Since then I made radical lifestyle changes and all blood test results have come back in normal range, including blood sugar. My cholesterol was a little raised before diagnosis, now after 4 and a half months later every aspect has improved apart from LDL which is a fraction higher, now at 3.52 (should be below 3). HDL and triglycerides now fine, total cholesterol only raised a little (5.15, should be below 5).

However, the doctor has messaged saying that I should start statins as it's "mildly raised". I presume this is because of the diabetes, as the numbers were worse before but described as "satisfactory" then. I have read that statins can raise blood sugar and interfere with insulin action which I really don't need after working so hard to get my numbers good. With no other risk factor apart from having diabetes and perhaps my age, is it necessary to take drugs to keep cholesterol below the levels of most healthy people?

You don’t have to take anything if you don’t want to! Do your homework and make an informed decision. Drs do tend to recommend statins for diabetics with a total cholesterol reading over 4, for the general population without diabetes it’s over 5. And yes there is evidence that statins raise blood sugars.
As I say read up and decide what’s best for yourself.

Status are nothing todo with your bg, statins are for cholesterol control.. you will be given statin if you cholesterol is high as your are at more risk of heart issue with diabetes

But it’s your choice if you take it

But just like diabetes there are better food options that can help lower cholesterol

It is related in a way, because the only reason they are wanting to give me statins is because I am now classed as diabetic. The numbers which were worse before diagnosis were described as satisfactory then, it's only because target numbers are very low for diabetics, much lower than most healthy people.

Presumably the main risk factor with diabetics is the BS being higher, but if it is kept in a non diabetic range then surely the risk of heart problems is not massively higher than anyone else? I.e. the extra heart risk is mainly caused by high BS rather than just being diabetic full stop?
