I was diagnosed at the start of April this year with A1C of 97. Since then I made radical lifestyle changes and all blood test results have come back in normal range, including blood sugar. My cholesterol was a little raised before diagnosis, now after 4 and a half months later every aspect has improved apart from LDL which is a fraction higher, now at 3.52 (should be below 3). HDL and triglycerides now fine, total cholesterol only raised a little (5.15, should be below 5).
However, the doctor has messaged saying that I should start statins as it's "mildly raised". I presume this is because of the diabetes, as the numbers were worse before but described as "satisfactory" then. I have read that statins can raise blood sugar and interfere with insulin action which I really don't need after working so hard to get my numbers good. With no other risk factor apart from having diabetes and perhaps my age, is it necessary to take drugs to keep cholesterol below the levels of most healthy people?
