at our funeral does the undertaker care that we are dead? nope
when buy shoes does the shop assistant care if we get blisters in a weeks time? nope
when we buy a sausage roll from gregs does the person selling it to us care if we enjoy it? nope
when we get on a bus does the bus driver care if the bus is late or we have a confortable journey? nope
does the air hostess care if we are uncomfortable or the food sucks? nope
do vicars get caught being paedophiles? yup
do policemen drink and drive? yup
do judges take drugs? yup

does the doctor care? some do, id say they have a worse job than all the above, some are under so much pressure its amazing they havent quit or had a nervous breakdown, if they did would we care? or would we just think oh great what idiot will i get next?
do you care if your dn has thrush? id rather she didnt but i dont really care, if she asked me for help id probly read something on the treatment of thrush and tell her that, especially if i had another 30 dns with various degrees of complaints that morning, and i hadnt slept well or the wife had moaned at me the night before or....

do we expect too much? i dont expect anything, so i dont, this is so very important to us but just a job to them im sure, some are amazing, for those we should be grateful and lucky if we come into contact with them, but otherwise be grateful this thing we have is self controllable to a large degree and thank god for the internet as we can gain the knowledge to do this

i typed this in response to another post but it sounded too negative :) id typed it all out so im ******** if im not posting it somewhere lol

It's got to be a thankless job really.

If they don't fix you, it's their fault.
It they do fix you, but you get a side effect from the tablets, it's their fault.
If it takes more than one tablet, they've over prescribed, and it's their fault.

Then, if they do fix you, and there's no side effects, it's the medicine that did it.

I wouldn't be a doctor, I'd probably deck the patient after the first one I saw.

Edit -Beat me to the post.

Food for thought, and it brings to mind the words about kitchen and heat.

Yep. They can stand the heat, I'd put the patient on a spit roast.

imagine if you worked in a bank and every customer that came in had an illness and they wanted to tell you all about it, then they expected you to diagnose them correctly and treat them, coughing and spluttering all over you, ive only gotta hear someone sneeze in the supermarket and im running in the opposite direction

I'm possibly naive but I have a completely different opinion regarding docs. I honestly don't think any healthcare professional out there wants to give poor treatment or advice. I'm sure there are some docs who are better than others, but what profession doesn't ? I have seen docs many times and have also been lucky enough to work alongside them. Many problems arise due to time constraints in my opinion. There is so much pressure on a doctors working day. I think GP's for instance allow roughly 10mins per patient. Hardly time to get a good background knowledge of a patients condition. Personally, I have only ever received great treatment, maybe I'm just lucky !

My brother is a junior doctor. He DEFINITELY cares about the patients he sees. If he didn't then he'd never stick it out with his degree to this point!

The issue with gps is they get these tiny slits to see you in. Diabetes and other long term conditions require such personalised care and they just can't do it in the time they're given.

lol, i worked in theatres at QMUH for a couple of years and the gorey bits were fine, i remember my first day, i was unwrapping the bandages of this dudes hand, he was holding hes fingers in a foam cup full of ice and with each turn of the bandage im thinking "am i gonna feint?" hehe i was lucky and it never bothered me, but the folks i dealt with were mostly unconcious and i was just a dogs body so just had to do what i was told, or they were under local and i just sat and chatted with them to take their minds off the bad things that were happening to them, that was over 20 years ago now and i remember it fondly but maybe thats just time making it seem better than it was

I'm with Mo on this one.

I often think a GP's consultation diary must be a bit like that fairground game where the wheel is spun, and depending where it stops, it will define the action required. So they press the buzzer, the patient walks in and they could have to deal with anything from a scabby leg, to a sickly child, to a dodgy back, to a terminal condition, and they have to deal with it there and then, with no preparation time. It must be quite troubling on occasion.

I really rate my GP. He's a great bloke. He's significantly imperfect, and can be brusque, but I believe he cares about his patients.

My diagnosis was delivered by another GP in the practise who, in my view, didn't handle it very well. But then, with a 10 minute slot, maybe he was up against it. And to be honest, I wasn't at my most receptive. I didn't want to be there. I was 2 weeks from a couple of life changing events, and all I needed was a diabetic diagnosis. Frankly, I was miffed. He could never have got it right.

I think for a condition demands self-management, the sooner we grasp control the better. My GP is my advisor, and I have to help him help me. Sadly, he won't always be able to help me in the way I would prefer.

I think it depends on what there interests are-my doctors practice have been generally really good but sometimes I think that they do not always keep up with the latest research. This is probably a time and budget issue. There are so many illnesses and we expect them to know everything. I think they would do more but are also limited by budget - as my doctor pointed out, he has 600 diabetics on his books and cannot afford to give everyone strips in the long term. The problem is, if the advice is not up to date or a patient is not made aware of all options then this can have a negative impact upon their health.

My neighbour is a funeral director and he cares very much if you are dead because he gets into bother for burying live 'uns.

Is this the Saturday night fight thread? :blackeye:

My GPs vary in quality, but they all seem to lack in one instance: If I am to respect they are experts in the field of medicine, they need to likewise acknowledge I am an expert on myself. If I tell them this tiredness is a sign I am unwell I expect not to be fobbed off with it is age/you are female/we all feel tired/whatever reason. I want to be taken seriously. It took me both time and effort to get my current one to sit up and take notice. Had he listened to me a year ago I would have been spared a lot and so would he.

I think that they generally do not expect people to ask questions and become nonplussed when patients ask challenging questions. Some cannot conceive that a patient who is really ill for example will drive a car. When I had pneumonia, I drove myself to the hospital. Because of this, I was sent home with tablets and told I'd be ok in a couple of days. Unfortunately I wasn't. My doctor reluctantly agreed to sign me off work 3 weeks later for another week and stopped medication. Two days later my friend drove me to hospital as I kept drifting in and out of consciousness. They then decided that I still had pneumonia and signed me off for another 2 weeks with pneumonia and new tablets.

Good lord! you would expect them to understand the consequences of pneumonia, wouldn't you?

I didn't understand I had broken my leg, so drove to the local surgery. It was painful.

The G in GP is for general. Jacks of all trades, masters of none. It is understandable that we have more interest in diabetes than general practitioners. This is why they have specialist diabetic nurses and dieticians. This is where it goes pear shaped, dietician-wise at least, in my opinion.

Can we add hairdressers to Andy's list? I am sitting on my head hair here cos they can't be trusted

As long as it's your hair and not someone else's otherwise they might be unhappy! Lol!
