Hi everyone,
I hope someone takes time to read my story so far as Im feeling quite lost and low at the moment---

Two weeks ago I went to my Doctor for blood results of an annual check-up for blood pressure to be told that my blood sugar was up and that I would have to have another check done.He asked me to book in when I left him.But here's the truth- I didn't book in as I was too frightened to do so.I sat outside had a weep and then resolved to sort this out so this is what I have done so far.
First I should describe my daily routine of life that was, because when I really think about it I am very ashamed but here goes.... :( ...

I am 57 yr old, 5ft 4in, 16 stone and 5IIb self employed lady and work from my car,if Im not in my car then I am walking to the customers house and sitting down.I would get up about 7.30am and always have a cooked breakfast which consisted of brown bread with either egg, beans or tomatoes followed by toast with home made jam plus a cup of tea...then off to work...
lunch time was a chosen sandwich from a supermarket, plus crisps and sweets...the sweets would take me through the afternoon and I would keep some back for the following morning.I carried a bottle of water and would have a couple of sips- not much though as its a job to find a loo!
Work generally finnished about 5.30pm on the road. When I got home I had to write up notes, sterilize equipment and pack everything for the following morning, which would take me to about 6.30pm -by which time I was thirsty and knackered.--and this is the best bit -my husband is retired so dinner would be on the table for me-meat and two veg with a cup of tea. After dinner I would retire to the TV and stay put till 10.30pm with 2-3 cans of diet pepsi and sometimes a vodka in one of them.A dreadful lifestyle as this happened four nights a week.

Now however,I had a life changing moment after leaving that Doc and this is what Ive done.
First Ive made another appointment to see him in two weeks time -this would make it a 4 week gap since the last appt.I then went to boots and purchased a blood glucose monitoring machine.Out went the sweets ,pop and vodka. In came Slimming World and daily exercise so now-----
I get up 7am and frog march my poor dog- Aero- around the block for a brisk 15 mins work out. Then its breakfast which so far has been porridge or boiled egg with brown bread and a cup of tea.I take a bottle of water with me plus a white meat and salad in the car. Im missing the pop though so now have sparkling water in its place if I fancy..I have re-arranged my clients so that I get a break at some point for loo stops and have now decided to go home if I can.I still finnish late but I have a cup of tea as soon as I get in whilst Im finnishing off work. Then I grab Aero again and we do a brisk one and three quarter walk before tea.Tea is fish or meat with two veg and no sauces or sugary fancy stuff.
So the end of the storey is this- I joined Slimming World who advocate high fibre, high protein low carb diet.Bearing in mind I might be diabetic, I decided to eat healthy carbs etc, my weight as I write this is now 15 stone 13 IIbs but my blood sugar I just dont understand.I appear within the normal range throughout the day which is from 4.5 to 5.9 then in the evening it rises 6.8 to 7.2 where first thing in the morning it appears to be from 6.8 to 7.2.
If Im mainly in the normal range does this mean Im on the slippery road or not?
I intend seeing my GP about this as Im determined to loose weight and ultimately pull myself back from the brink.Maybe though he will still want another bloode test -scarey stuff

I'm not sure what test your GP did, but it could just be that your blood sugars were raised at that moment. The test he wanted to do was probably a blood test to check your average blood sugar over the last 3 months just to be certain.

The thing with type 2 diabetes is that it can be reversed through lifestyle changes, and it sounds like you have already started with that.

Yes it sounds like your sugars are in perfectly normal ranges, but no harm in making sure.

Well there's nothing to get over anxious about, just do what you are already doing. A little bit of tweaking with food may be required, but probably not much if at all. Just find out, see what the doc thinks and then work out what needs to be done. Better to know and do something about it than not know and not do anything.

Being self employed puts you in a better position than many people. I know being self employed is time consuming and tough, but you can sort out many things, like picking up decent foods from the shops, during the day. Many can't. They're stuck with what is local to where they work. A flask and decent food containers go a long way. I even made a great picnic out in the lake district this weekend and it was more enjoyable than any meal on offer in the hotel.

You sound very much as if you know what to do. Just carry on and stop worrying. You'll learn about foods as you go along. Watch the bread. Brown bread means nothing. Most bread is like spooning in sugar. Avoid potatoes white rice and pasta and you'll very probably see those evening and early morning levels drop within a few weeks. I was in the 9s and 10s and am now in 4s and 5s. You're almost there now, so you don't have far to go.
