docs only checking fasting glucose

I've had high blood sugar readings for a while now. I have been self monitoring myself for a year and my sugar levels have been in the range of 12-13 an hour after high carb meals, sometimes even two hours after meals but fastig glucose was always normal so doctors kept telling me i was normal because fasting levels were always 5.4, 5.5.

Lately they've been 6.6 and post meal levels are still high, around 9, 10, 11, 12 and got another blood test booked at my gps next week. its another fasting test but i'm thinking of eating some carbs before the test so its over 7 and then maybe i could get some help with this.

Why do doctors only check fasting glucose?

Hi. I guess one answer is that they don't fully understand diabetes testing and NICE guidelines? Your GP should be doing either a GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) or an HBa1C to properly diagnose diabetes. A fasting test measures background insulin production whereas the GTT measures response, or lack of, to peak insulin needs after meals. Perhaps you can persuade him to do of these two? BTW have a fasting period between 10-12 hours and perhaps have a good carby meal 10 hours before the fasting test? Also, you should be testing yourself 2 hours after a meal and not really 1 hour.

My doc will do either a fasting or a random HbA1c depending on which doc I see or what they are looking for. Agree with Daibell you should leave the after meal BS test to 2 hrs after your meal.

Thanks for the responses,I'm going to start testing only two hours after.

Numbers in double figures are almost never seen in people who don't have a sugar problem. Your doctor should know this

This is why I'm not going to fast for the next test. I've been complaing about my bs to them since last January but fasting test was always below 7 so they kept telling me my sugars were great.
