Doctors Appointment - Need Questions To Ask

Hello Again

Right folks, it's been a month now since I started my medication. I've had three blood tests now (today was the latest for liver function). My last visit to the doc's (two weeks ago) was an appointment made by me as no one else had bothered and I saw a person who didn't really say much except I needed another blood test and she'd make an appointment for me with the diabetes clinic. So today with the nurse I asked if I was ever going to see someone about this.

No appointments available in the next two weeks with the only "diabetes doc" in the practice, but I could have a telephone appointment this afternoon.

So, what I need from you fine people is a few questions to throw at him when he phones this afternoon.

I believe I'm type 2 (only after reading this forum) and I'm on 2 x 500mg Metformin and 1 x 40mg Simvastatin daily.

If i were you, questions that would spring to mind are

-what type am I, how do you know?

-What was the blood taken for, what are the results/when can I get them

-what is going to be my diabetic care plan - who will monitor me, my condition, my medication. How often do I see medics, and who will I see etc.

-what side effects could i get from meds, if this happens what is the next course of action

-can I/do you intend to refer me to a specialist clinic/diabetologist (insist on it!!)I am asssuming of course the clinic you refer to in your post is your GP based diabetic clinic.

-can I get strips and a glucose testing monitor (NICE guidelines on this for type 2's apparently - worth checking before you speak to him)

IF they say you shouldnt, ask how you are supposed to monitor the effectiveness of your medication, diet and exercise programme on your blood sugar, and PREVENT complications

Im a type 1, so maybe other type 2's could add to these very basic questions in more specific terms

What are the risk factors with my condition as it is?

What are the risk factors with my medication?
 
Why was I put on simvastatin, if it's nothing to do with diabetes?
Have you got any HbA1c results for me?
How often will I be monitored? If the answer is less frequent than every 3 months ask if you can monitor yourself
Can I have enough test strips to make sure I learn how to eat?
