Hi went to docs today hbac1 6.3 feel extreme thirst and tiredness doc said he did'nt understand as all my blood results were good i have been controlling with diet can't take metformin [really upsets tummy] i told him that i test at home once a day 2 hours after dinner and my results have increased between 10 and 12.5 very high for me he said it was a waste of time to test my own sugar levels as it was totally irrelevant, i said that i needed to know what affects me he replied that he would not bother arguing this with me came away angry time to change doctors i think [i buy my own strips etc so i was not asking for anything [Supercheck2] why is it that type 2's are treated like this and refused the tools to take care of ourselves

Your Dr is an ass! Stupid man! It's obvious that you are getting high blood sugar readings and you have the symptoms. Type II's are definitely treated unfairly, and better education for the Drs/Nurses is needed. What is your next step? Take care.

Ive put this on another post so sorry for repeating
I bought a monitor , an exercise bike and down loaded my fitness pal app.
These are my tools for controlling diabetes.
I realise I am lucky being able to control it. I heard the same as you ...Don't test ....eat carbs etc etc ...I now tell them that the advice is wrong for me .they can't argue because im controlled. Hba1c 6.1.
Ive lost weight and feel great .
I have a feeling that soon there will be a study which will change the advice.
When I was young my gran was a diabetic and had to control with reduced carbs "portions".
It will come full circle.
I think diabetes is a very individual condition , what works for 1 wont work for another. You do what you find works for you , keep seeing your gp when needed though

So your GP said he didn't understand? What did he actually advise then- I assume you told him you weren't taking any metformin.

Was this the GP that advised you to take the metformin in the first place?

Have you seen your DSN at your Practice. I know of a GP that actually admits that she is not a specialist in diabetes and leaves it to the dsn to prescribe changes-all she does is look it up on the BMF (??) to make sure that it is double checked before signing it off....

Doesn't your GP Practice have a diabetes clinic where you could speak to a DSN that actually knows about diabetes?

Teagan;
If my GP was yours I think that I'd change. I'm lucky; I've got a good GP and the practice nurse who is diabetic herself have always been wonderful and answered all my questions. Hearing about your GP makes me so angry; no-one should be treated like that, especially by the people who are supposed to be looking after your health. I totally understand not being able to take metformin; that make me sick. Medications don't always work, none of the ones I was given did and I was put on injections, much better and no side effects. When I was first diagnosed I was told that diabetes is a progressive illness and needs to be closely monitored. I'm scratching my head wondering what this idiot GP is thinking? I would rather know and that way I can take steps to change something in my diet.
If you don't have a good relationship with the GP or the practice nurse then change your GP. When you make an appointment with the new surgery have a list of questions and if the GP is good then they will answer them. I did that with the GP I'm with now.
Good luck.

Hi Teagan, I get exactly the same response from my doctor and diabetic nurse. At my last visit I had reduced my Hba1c from over 11 to 5.1,improved my cholesterol by 0.2 and lost 17kgs. I got told I was not eating enough carbs and as I was on metformin and only had type 2 I was wasting my time testing. They also I had lost too much weight (I'm still over 120kgs) They would not give me any strips as its against policy (more like costs). I was then told they'd see me next year as I only had mild diabetes and shouldn't worry about it as it was all fine. We'll after my anger subsided I've looked into other practices / doctors in my area, once I've had my holiday inoculations I'm moving doctors. As I've only been diagnosed since March and was still going to the NHS diabetic clinic learning about everything, they have written a letter of complaint. I doubt it will change anything. But I'm now more resolved to improve my test and general health and stick a couple fingers up to my bigoted former doctor and diabetic nurse. Keep the faith, and keep doing what feels right for you! I think some doctors almost see diabetes as self inflicted and we deserve it as we can't have looked after ourselves.

Hi ive copied this from another post but I think it s relevant. I had a conversation with 2 dieticians today ( casual conversation not as a patient).
I discussed NICE advice and asked their opinion on low carb. They advocated high fibre ( usual advice) said the guidance was evidence based , I couldn't argue with that.

I told them I couldn't tolerate carbs of any variety , unless in small portions.
One of them said diabetes is such a personal thing and was glad I have found something that works for me.
The other one basically didn't believe me and thought I was talking ****. She didn't actually use those words but that was the message I got.

You know what I don't care what they thought really. I know I feel better , much better infact and my blood sugars are stable.

In conclusion , purely my opinion, the experts will catch up with what we already know and the national guidance will change.
As I said , purely my opinion.

Thanks to everyone on here for their great advice.
