Hi, newish diagnosed ( 2nd Jan, 2013 ) and all signs were type 2. I'm 46 yrs old but not really overweight and reasonably fit. I am on gliclazide, metformin, atorvastatin and basal insulin. Various blood tests done and all healthcare providers told me type 2. Went to hospital today and told actually type 1 in "honeymoon period".
Does everyone get this ?
I have looked at some past posts on this and see that difficult to put time frames on this so I'm very confused again. The doctor told me I'd have to go on fast acting insulin and DAFNE course, then 5 mins later, a consultant told me to carry on as I am ! What should I expect now ? I'm back at hospital in 3 months time. Thanks ;-)

Re: Does everyone have a

So, as I understand things you basically were told by a consultant to carry on as is.. So there isnt any note to take to your gp to ask him to prescibe you fast acting insulin?

What are your levels running at for a 24 hour period currently?

Consultant told me to actually reduce basal slightly. I now take 5 units am, 6 units pm. Along with tablets still. My avg BG is pretty good actually. Waking is usually around 6 or so and that is pretty much my avg. I've had a couple of lows, 2.8 and 1 high, over 10. I honestly thought I was type 2 under control and would be taken off insulin. I feel a slight cheat as I can pretty much eat and drink what I like and my bloods remain normal ? Weird !

Re: Does everyone have a

I dont know much (anything) about honeymoon period.. 30 years ago when diagnosed I was type 1 and never had it mentioned to me.

I see quite a few postings on here about it.. I sometimes just think for myselfonly that my body changes so much from season to season, exercise, different medicines etc thatit has alot to contend with..so I've always had to accept that I am always having to change doses and rates. But that just me and my living. I do eny those that can stay balanced without changing things.. I really do.

What a difference between your consultants thoughts and advice though... Do you watch your carb intake now.. If you get Dafne mentioned again.. Get consultant to book immediately.. Shove the pen n paper under his nose!! Some people have fought and fiught to get a dafne course..30 years andI never been offered one!!

So what are your thoughts for going back to hosp in 3 months?

Not too sure really. I feel fine and I'm happy my BG is under control at present. I was offered DAFNE course which I accepted but after consultant over-ruled doc and left me on basal insulin I can't attend yet. I guess I'm still slightly in shock over diagnosis. Also, still questions unanswered. Doc told me my GAD came back positive but the C Pep test failed so done that again. Everytime I go to hospital I think "finally, all my questions and tests will be resolved". Then I come away with more questions than I went in with. In one respect, I'd rather have just gone straight onto the fast acting insulin to give me time to get used to it. I now know it's only a matter of time anyway. It will also help in my return to work. I work in Fire Service and need to provide evidence that my diabetes is under control prior to returning to operational duties. This is very difficult when I am sort of "in limbo" at present. I guess I should just be grateful that I feel fit and healthy still ! Thanks for taking the time to reply BTW.
