Depression is a serious problem affecting almost 25% of persons with diabetes, and the risk of depression is doubled in women compared with men with diabetes.1 A meta-analysis of 27 studies demonstrated that depression is significantly associated with hyperglycemia for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.2 Moods such as anxiety and anger often accompany depression in persons with diabetes.3–5Anxiety has been reported to be as high as 30–40% in persons with diabetes,6,7 with women having higher levels than men.8 Anxiety has also been associated with poor glycemic control.9,10 Anger has also been linked to depression11 and associated with poorer self-management and hyperglycemia for persons with diabetes.12,13
