Depression is a serious problem affecting almost 25% of persons with diabetes, and the risk of depression is doubled in women compared with men with diabetes.1 A meta-analysis of 27 studies demonstrated that depression is significantly associated with hyperglycemia for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.2 Moods such as anxiety and anger often accompany depression in persons with diabetes.35Anxiety has been reported to be as high as 30–40% in persons with diabetes,6,7 with women having higher levels than men.8 Anxiety has also been associated with poor glycemic control.9,10 Anger has also been linked to depression11 and associated with poorer self-management and hyperglycemia for persons with diabetes.12,13

Yes it certainly does! High blood sugar makes people more irritable and tired, low blood sugar makes them confused and scared. I feel like all these diabetics with depression or whatever other problems mentioned there are actually just experiencing symptoms of poor control. Also worrying about hypos or other problems naturally increases the anxiety you experience, which in my opinion is not a problem since worrying about hypos is the best way of preventing them. I know I get VERY grumpy when my blood sugars are out of control, then magically get better when I've recovered. I'm not sure it's a mental health problem so much as a badly controlled diabetes problem.

I say all the is accurate. But since i got addisons (requires cortisone daily) in addition to T1, i think my anxiety has increased and ill temper. This cud be bcos bs variability is reputedly greater with Addisons in T1 diabs. But i dont know if other Addisonian T1s experienced the same. :-/

I shud also say my marriage broke up (good while back, due. to increasing frequency of hypos b4 addisons diagnosed), i was ill to continue my career and spent 15 years in jobs fir which i wasnt terribly well suited. I retrained and, now in a contract after retraining. But worried about finding next job and my own competency (its a v complex job) ie will my reference and onward ability be sufgicient? ...
