Daily Mail, you know the sort
I'm a non medicated T2 and have been for 9 years. I have always done loads of exercise - mostly cycling and running but always some weights work for injury prevention and to keep myself in shape as I get older (56 now).

However, 5 years ago I had a bad reaction to statins (I no longer take them) and lost a lot of strength and probably muscle mass. Since then I have attempted to re-build muscle through weight training coupled with increased protein intake. Unfortunately this has been unsuccessful, I seem to be incapable of building muscle. I understand that this is harder in older people anyhow but I have seen elsewhere reference to a theory that T2 insulin resistance inhibits muscle growth.
Can anyone shed some light on this or give me any other advice?

I know what you mean. I definitely think that t2 can affect muscle growth.

If I trained like I do/have now a few years before diagnosis I would have become hulk like within a few months, now all the hardest training in the world and quality protein shakes doesn't have much effect on muscle size. Even creatine didn't help.On the plus side my stomach is better toned than ever. I still do it to keep bs levels down though.

Seems like t2 not only prevents glucogen uptake to the muscle but also hinders muscle growth/repair?

This could be an answer:

basically low birth weight children and those with slow growth in the first couple of years are at greater risk of T2 diabetes (that's me!). This is linked to the amount of muscle mass they have in adulthood, which is pretty much predetermined by time of birth.
So, although I have never had a high BMI, it's likely that my BMI was still too high for the amount of skeletal muscle I have. And as muscle mass is positively involved in insulin response, I was therefore more likely to develop T2 without being classically 'overweight'.

It seems I should have had the Mo Farah 'look' all these years rather than the Mr Average. :? And I would never have developed a Mr Universe body whatever I did, due to the low growth as a baby.

Anyhows, back to finding out what I can do about gaining a bit of muscle - if anything?

It's possible to gain muscled stuffedolive, just not massive amounts of it like nondiabs! lol

Catherinecherub, how long you been controlling via diet if you don't mind me asking?
