Don't you hate it when you see a new Dr? and they think the

Right I have been mulling over this for a couple of days... would appreciate some input..

I have been seeing the same consultant now every three months or a number of years, and he is even open to the odd e-mail discussion... we have a good relationship and he is willing to have an informed conversation reference my diabetes and control.

Tuesday I had my annual audit and he was on holiday so had my results discussed with a Registrar... who it seems without asking any questions had made their mind up before I walked in the room as to what my control was like, etc... etc... Ensure an hour long discussion about how terrible I am reference tight control, reduced carb diets, the use of two different fast acting insulins and being on Insulatard rather than a standard basal... (all of which has been discussed and agreed to previously...) which only really ended when I showed her my meter and the number of sub 3.6 mmol/l readings I have had in the last 90 days (zero out of nearly 850 readings).. at least then she had to concede I wasn't passing out every day from hypo's and I might just understand my body a little better than her...

I am used to normally having productive appointments and was/am really irritated about how the appointment went... given the length of the discussion I didn't get to ask any of the questions I had planned to and am generally really cross about the way I was treated like an idiot... I am an adult I am informed and I am conscientious.. so why treat me like an idiot... it wasn't even like she had a coherent argument... *rage* just generalisation

Anyway's I am in two minds now as to whether I should send an e-mail stating my displeasure or let it ride and hope I don't have the pleasure of her company again? Thoughts?

Send an e-mail. AND avoid her in the future. If you're happy with your consultant it's probably worth waiting 'til he is available for your next appointment.

Hi
I would send an e-mail and like the person before said try and avoid seeing her again, as we usually know what our levels and bodies do or not. When u have had diabetes a long time we know ourselves better than the doctor sometimes.
Hope all goes well

Pneu,

Like you I have seen a Registrar and not got off to the best of starts, when I attend clinics for my annual diabetes/eye tests I always make a point of asking for the same consultant who knows my history best, obviously this wasn't possible in your case as the consultant was on holiday so I understand your frustration of having to cover old ground.

Personally I would just forget about it and move on rather than complain, you could mention it to your consultant when you next attend clinic and they may have a quiet word with the registrar in question, but at the end of the day the decision is all yours on how best to follow this up.

Cheers for the replies..

As it is I got caught up at work so didn't have the time to pen a mail..

I think I will chalk this one down to yet another sub-par HCP! and should be back with the usual Dr at my next appointment.

Hi Pneu...I would hope that you were able to teach the registrar something. This is obviously not what your appointment is for...but looking for the bright side, I hope at least this registrar had her diabetes education improved!

Hi everyone!

I recently had a GP tell me that changing my insulin doses for every meal is not good because it is easier for them! In other words using insulin/carb ratios are not a good idea. I could not believe what I was hearing......I have been miss diagnosed about three times by GPs in the past, once with Pneumonia when I was told I had flu, when I had fibroids and again when I was slipping into a diabetic coma. So I take what they say with a 'pinch of salt'

I have had good control on i/cs and certainly would not advise people to come off them!!

At the end of the conversation she did ask me if I was carb counting...this told me that she could not understand what I was talking about.

My GP is good for one thing and that's signing my repeat prescription! I avoid diabetic chat at all costs!

Re: Don't you hate it when you see a new Dr? and they think

I have been summoned to see my GP tomorrow in fact.
I moved a couple months ago and haven't actually met the guy yet.

The practice nurse at the new place is brilliant and openly admitted, when I turned up with A1c of 6 and the last 3 months of logs, that I am clearly doing a brilliant job and obviously know more about dealing with this than she could ever treat me.

My last Dr was also pretty good that way so let's see what this one is like, fingers crossed I get one that accepts that I am eductaed and informed and will simply keep signing off the prescription.

Fingers crossed.

Re: Don't you hate it when you see a new Dr? and they think

I never enjoy a trip to my GP or Diabetes consultant! My consultant changes everytime I go, and each is about as useless as the last. I normally get "so what insulin do you take at b'fast/lunch/dinner" and when I mention that it changes each time depending on what I eat etc, the consultant normally looks confused! My favourite question is, "so when did you last go hypo?" As I try to maintain my sugars at 6-8, they often drop to sub 4, but that to me is just a sign that it's time to eat.

My GP was the best though, two visits ago he asked me to complete a 'depression questionnaire' (I was there for back pain). I was aware that I've been feeling low, but never to the extent of needing professional help. He read the answers on the paper and then said nothing more about it. At my last visit, for a completely unrelated matter, out of the blue he just said "so, are you still feeling "depressed" " said with a shrug and in a tone that made it sound like an imaginary illness. I could have ripped his head off! He made me feel that even if I did feel depressed, I would not have told him anyway.

Rant over :x

LOL!!!!!!!! My experience is that virtually ALL "experts" are pretty useless.I know that when ever i see them i will be asked something not me asking them about something! No i am not trying to be big headed its just one expert dosent talk to another, i use a jet injector and every single consultant has always asked me to "bring it in i have never seen one before, how does it work?".When i see my GP its "why has the consultant put you on this?", or the diabetic nurse asks "what is this drug your GP put you on?".Its reached the stage where i just dont want to see these idiots, i feel like i am an unpaid professor giving a class instead of someone helping me!
Lol your rant is a well known and experienced one!!! :)
