Dr Bernstein's Diet

Does anybody still follow this diet? Husband had huge success when first diagnosed and on this, I keep thinking to go back to it now. But that was nearly 18 years ago - although I suppose it wouldn't be that different as it very low carb. What are your thoughts on it?
 
Isn't this simply a keto/very low carb way of eating?
Lots of members are eating low carb or keto, including myself, and many of us have done so for many years with no plans to change.

However, I do not follow a specific plan, I just steer away from the carbier stuff most of the time (occasional deviation when I feel I have a good reason to) and eat the rest to satiety.
 
@fumanchu I'm not sure if you mean something as specific as Dr Berstein used, or just very low carb (i.e. keto or close to keto)?
If the latter, then as a Type 2 that is what I used to gain and maintain remission from Type 2 Diabetes. It's probably more used by Type 2's these days than Type 1's, including many on this forum as well as patients of certain GP surgeries such as Southport and Freshwell to name just 2 in the UK.
I dislike the word diet, since, particularly in the context of Type 2 diabetes, it gives the impression that the aim is weight loss. I just call it a way of eating which supports metabolic health. I have seen reports of its use for T1 and T2 diabetes, as well as Weight and Blood Pressure normalisation, epilepsy and mental health in countries all over the world.
 
I’ve only just recently read his book and I’m having great success following his diet!! Low carb has been so much better for me I have stable blood sugars every day
 
Sorry I wasn't more specific - yes I meant Bernstein's actual diet. I have his book but I've recently moved house twice in 3 years and cannot find it We do eat LC and it does work but Bernstein had more dramatic effects somehow. Plus the food is very nice!
 
I think my way of eating is more anti carb than the Bernstein diet as I avoid foods with more than 10% carb content - but I am very sensitive to carbs, particularly those considered healthy options by many. The basic principle is the same though - avoid what you can't cope with. The Atkins diet back in 1960 and Banting in 1860 - approximately, could be considered old, but they are effective ways to lower intake of carbs and the consequences of that.
 
I think Banting was the pioneer in LC yes. But I just liked the recipes in the Bernstein book and how he uses butter and cream in his cooking. But the newest stuff just doesnt work for us somehow, like the Fast 800 etc. Too many new faddy strange foods for an old lady like me - the last one of these books I got had only one recipe with foods I recognised in it!
 
I think the fast 800 is a low-calorie approach rather than low-carb, although with only 800 available calories it is going to be sort of low carb by default.

is this the book you mean? The second hand price is amazingly high.


I've never bothered too much with low carb recipes - I tend to cook much the same as I've always cooked, but leave out the pasta/rice/potatoes/pastry/cereals. I aim for around 20g/day so it's very low carb.

Tonight (for example) is gammon steaks with fried eggs, fried in butter, a caprese salad (burrata, tomatoes, basil) and maybe strawberries and cream afterwards. I've just taken out the saute potatoes that I would have included a few years ago.
