How can we trust that they are acting for our best interests?
I am so glad that I have read this thread before visiting my gp. The last time I saw my diabetic nurse she advised me to see the gp because I needed to go on statins after a cholesterol reading of 4.8!! I was gobsmacked to say the least, and didn't agree that I needed them. So I have put off going to see the gp for about four weeks. My mum, who is not diabetic, was put onto statins some years ago, and they played havoc with her insides, eventually giving her gastritis. She was then taken off them, but not before she started suffering several other problems in the meantime. I think I might just go and see the doc, but I will voice my concern and I will tell her that I wont be pushed into taking them. I will try to alter my lifestyle substantially more than I have already, to see if that will do the trick. Thanks for bringing attention to the subject, I, personally, appreciate it very much.
I took simvastatin for about 18 months, they took my cholesterol down from 5.2 to 3.0. After reading about them and that they are not proven for women. I stopped taking them. My cholesterol has gone back up but I'm not bothered. I think it is something that I need especially as it is implicated in conversion of sunlight to Vitamin D.
Even if there was a case for me to take statins, I think that I was on too high a dose as I think 3.0 is way too low.
I'd like to add that I have taken part in medical research where I had a CT scan of my heart and the cardiologist said I had no calcium deposits and everything is working well.
On the statistical thing it seems that this epidemiological approach to medicine is all very well when looking at contagious disease in a population but not at more subtle (non-contagious) illnesses like heart disease with multiple, not very well understood, risk factors. With the spread of measles it makes sense that the entire population receives immunisations
but that is just not the case when you are looking at CVD especially as there seems such **** poor analysis of the causes of it.
In Dr Briffa's newsletter is an article "If stations are so safe, how come researchers won't let us see their safety data". See http://www.drbriffa.com/2014/03/27/...-wont-some-researchers-let-us-see-their-data/
I'm actually worried because my triglyceride count came in at 0.6 without statins... And this is too low (supposedly) but I cant fi d any advice anywhere how to raise it. My good cholesterol was off tbe scale the other way being good.. And ldl good....
How do you raise triglcerides... These readings are all after being off statins again for 3 months...cos of bad heart palpitations.. Would they betorally out ofmy system?
Why do you think that level is too low? According to my test results, they should be under 1.3 and no lower limit is set (unlike HDL which has a range of 1.1-3.5)
I too had pains in my legs, told the Doctor he gave me Viagra said it was poor circulationI yoo stopped taking statins as they were making my muscles weak and ache, then my friend said statins made her legs so weak that she cannot walk very well and has to use a wheelchair. I also asked my Dr to take me off metformin because I read several articles that said Metformin is one of 7 most deadly drugs in the world! He said..." Its the best Medication for your condition" so kill me why don't you I said! Can anyone help with this.... I often have pains in my whole leg... Its as if the large vein in my leg was a bare electric wire and the current is switched on. Well, that's the only way I can explain it! I'm female 67yr old .
