Hi all I'm curious, I have just fasted and my starting glucose levels are 7.8 mmol/L.

I Drank a black coffee no sugar or sweetener
Tested again after 15 minutes and it went to 7.5 mmol/L.

I had a weak Robinson's no added sugar dialute one pint and tested again after 15 minutes and my levels spiked to 17.2 mmol/L

I'm very confused as this orange is supposed to be 0g sugar per 250ml dialute no carbs listed either.
I understand there is natural fruit that would cause a spike but surly it should be listed?

Any advice please and drink solutions

Kindest Regards Phil

Did you wash your hands before doing the test - if not it could've been some residue from something on your hands

A raise of 10mmol/L in 15 mins would make me thing something had gone iffy with the test, either not clean hands or just a dodgy test strip, did you try again?

That Robinsons no sugar orange squash doesn't obviously raise my sugar levels

Hi Rokaab,

Thanks for the quick response.

I did have washed clean hands before the test.

Also tried alternative testing spots.

I will repeat the test tomorrow.

It happened the other day too hence I tried today to simulate.

Kindest Regards

Phil

I'd hazard a guess that your body is reacting to the sweeteners in it. Probably worth avoiding and just have water, tea or coffee?

Although the label says no ADDED sugar the second ingredient is orange juice from concentrate at 20%. That is a sugar source. Some people also find that artificial sweeteners also increase their blood glucose levels.

Beside the bit where its shows energy and salt it does also state (in very small writing):
'Contains negligible amounts of fats, saturates, carbohydrate, sugar and protein' so its shouldn't have much in the way of carbs/sugar in it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I tested again today

4SURE SMART DUO

Fasting Blood Sugars 7.3mmol/L

20ml Robinson Sugar Free Orange Squash in water.

Post Blood Sugars 16.7 mmol/L

I understand that there are concentrated sugars from the fruit but omg that's ok a massive spike.

I think it should say clearly how many grams of sugar are in it.

Not 0g as per the label as according to their label in 250ml = 0g of sugar

Again thank you for your time and help.

Anyone tried lemon or like zest from the rind in water?

May try that next

As previously mentioned it may actually be the sweeteners that you are reacting to, rather than actual carbs/sugars - I've seen some report that

For myself I get no obvious rise from drinking that stuff and normally even 5 carbs will create an obvious rise on my sensor data (of about 3-5mmol/L)

Edit: from a very quick Google: 'negligible' in this case for nutritional info for carbs and sugars should be less than 0.5g per 100g/ml

A perfect example of why we should test. We are all different and testing is the best and fastest way of learning what suits our body, and what doesn't .

Next job is to test the lemon water, but do remember to wash hands after touching it. I got the highest numbers ever after zesting a lemon. I didnt even eat any, just used it for cooking but it was on my hands!

It says 20% is ‘fruit from concentrate’, so that’s 20% carbs. However as you dilute it, I guess their ‘trace’ carbs claim is for a diluted portion. One of the sweeteners is sucralose, which is derived from sugar, so as others have said it could well be that your reaction is just as much to that as the orange juice concentrate.

Personally I’m far more suspicious of anything that says ‘no added sugar’ than those which don’t try and hide the sugar.

If you keep testing and it keeps spiking, I suppose you should just skip the Robinsons, but I think it would be worth checking in case there's something else going on; The carb count in Robinsons no added sugar orange is 0.6g per 100ml, and that's before you add the water. A pint or so of weak diluted Robinsons shouldn't normally spike you so high, if at all. Maybe you're reacting badly to one of the sweeteners,
