Anonymous Question Driving licence renewal

Anonymous Question

Anonymous question submitted:

My driving licence is due for renewal and as usual, we have loads of forms to complete. One form asks if you know what the symptoms of hypo are? The next asks have you had an episode of hypo? the next have you had more than one episode of severe hypo? It feels like they are trying to trick us. It doesnt ask over what time period they are enquiring about, I would say most type 1 diabetics have had a hypo so am I right in assuming I put yes I know what the symptoms are and yes I've had hypos at some point since diagnosis. Any comments as to what everyone else is doing would be useful. Thanks.

The time period is the last 12 months. They are not overly concerned with hypo's that you recognise and deal with. They are more worried over people either losing hypo awareness or not being able to deal with hypo. For instance, had to call an ambulance or treatment by a third party.

They class a severe hypo as one where you needed assistance from a third-party, for example a paramedic. There's no tricks involved in the questions that the DVLA are asking and the notes that accompany the form explains all, they are just trying to determine if you are safe enough to drive and be issued with a 1, 2 or 3 year licence.
