Hi,

I informed DVLA that I am now taking insulin.

They wrote back and said that my existing licence will be revoked and I will only get a licence if I agree to short period licence of 3 years.

Looks like I have no choice, but was wondering if this standard practice ?

Paul

Hi Paul,

I think this is standard, mine was also reduced to three years. Annoying isn't it?!

Yes its normal for insulin users, they can issue 1 year licenses too

Its so that at renewal time they will get a doctors report on you, and decide if anything has happened in the last 3 years to prevent you from driving

The good news is renewals are free

Hi All.
Yes its standard practice mine is up for renewal 2014 .
Thanks for the info about renewals being free of charge searley
Wonder if they will automatically send us the notice of renewals out in the post?
I had to fill part of form in then my GP had to verify it as truth countersigned
by himself.
Its a pain but we 'have' it to do...
Anna.

Yes it is Paul for insulin users. Depending what is written on the renewal forms and any checks they follow-up the DVLA will issue people with a 1,2 or 3 year licence.

Hi Paul,
as other have said yes this is normal for all insulin users.
Please also be aware you will loose certain categories from your licence as well.

Thanks everybody for the replies. I just wanted to check I was getting the standard treatment.

The document says I can no longer drive a minibus or light lorries which is no great loss. I do sometimes hire a Mercedes Vito 9 seater for family trips. Just hope that isn't class as a mini bus.

*EDIT* Looks like its 7 seats max

I've been pleased with my car insurers "More Than". They said they don't add anything to the premium as long as I haven't had a any diabetes related incidents. They seem to be good to their word as my recent renewal was just about the same as last year.

*EDIT*
Seems its illegal to hike a premuim again
