is it standard practice for a type 2 diabetic who moves onto insulin to have their driving license changed to a three year medical license?

Yes, anyone on insulin (unless temporarily) and some other blood glucose medications as well will have their driving license changed to a 3 year medical one in the UK if they are not on one already
 
Anyone on blood sugar lowering drugs such as insulin must inform the DVLA as you at risk of hypo.
Please take note of advice/rule regarding testing when driving.

Yes and you need to inform your insurance

Read the rules in relation to testing and driving

Carry fast and longer acting carbs in the car

Always keep an emergency supply of fast-acting carbohydrate such as glucose tablets or sweets within easy reach in the vehicle.

Ah ok.. I’m similar with food have to be carefully what I carry as I can’t resist

I tend to carry stuff I hate to eat

But have to be careful with driving and the rules as they will revoke your license if not careful

A lot of people that use the libre or Dexcom don’t carry a glucose meter with them when driving.. but it is a requirement to have it with you

Everyone that is on glucose lowering meds should read the guidance forms.. and check them every 6 months or so as they do change and get tweaked

As they say .. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse…. and your licence could very will get revoked

I actually have to renew my license every 12 months as I’m an hgv driver.. and the rules are generally stricter for me.. but one thing I always manage is to have a good chat with the dvla appointed medical consultant (ff the record advice) :-)
