My partner of many years has had Diabetes type 2, for some years now, and has lately been on a Byetta non-insulin pen, along with metformin. He has been told he will have to go on insulin now, and sees his GP this month to begin taking it. However, he is a HGV driver, and has a full time job. We have tried several places and sites, and calls to find out about his option to still drive when he goes on the insulin, or whether he has to have 3 months off? We have had several different answers so far, so we are totally confused. Can anyone clarify the actual answer to this? He's been told it will be a very small dose of insulin he will be going on. Many thanks.

I was class 1 lgv driver had my lgv revoked in December. He will lose his lgv and it will be for longer than 3 months as soon as he informs DVLA they strongly recommend that you do not drive group 2 vehicles. Being realistic I think you will be looking at around 6 months if not longer and that's if you jump through all their hoops it is really hard to get back lgv from them but it's difficult

Hi Dotty
Have a look at the DVLA website. They have the definite rules that may apply.
Best wishes

Thank you Alan. We have looked at the DVLA website, but it's like looking at a bowl of mud. We've rang them too, and spoke to 3 people who all gave us different answers.
Thank you for your answer and advice x

Thank you for your reply. Appreciated. Yes he has Class1 licence, but at present is driving Class2 tippers for Tarmac, so presuming he might end up as you say? Did you go on sickness pay?

Yes as I am having problems still I get what is called ESA. I wish I could give better news I would

No, thank you for being honest. We just want to know where we stand, as we have a holiday booked for the end of April into May, and have paid for flights and deposit on villa, but if he has to be off work for the weeks running up to it, then we will struggle to actually go away, as the balance has to be paid before we go, and then there's the car hire and spending money. It's a nightmare all round, but we just need to know the exact details, so thank you again. Appreciated x
