Been Dr today because I've been urinating a lot, loss of weight, and tired and exhausted, he told me it was probably psychologicaland not diabetes as I had a test for that two years ago and it was clear then. Surely I need to be tested again just to be sure??
I know these could be symptoms for other problems but I am concerned its diabetes, he sent a urine sample of for me and said he was pretty sure it would come back normal, so don't contact us we will contact you if something shows up........ sorry I don't have much faith in Dr's......

Most chemists will test you - or ask a diabetic friend with a tester. (Change the lancet!)

I was tested - GTT - & found to be not at risk. About 3 years on I was diabetic.

Just sit tight and wait, you could ring the surgery despite what your gp says and ask for the results, if your not happy with your present gp then change doctor or gp practise.

Sometimes I despair at the way GPs treat their patients... what happened to *caring* about our well-being?!?

2 years is an eternity in terms of developing medical conditions - I'm pretty angry about this on your behalf actually. How dare he be so blazé about it? Do you have a history of diabetes in your family? I think you should definitely consider finding a new GP if he continues to have this kind of attitude to your health care.

(grrr... sorry for getting a bit worked up but this makes me mad! I know we are all tightening our belts because of the economy etc etc, but really, these are perfectly reasonable symptoms to be enquiring about!!)

Anyway, I hope you get it sorted and i hope for your sake that the test doesn't come back positive! Good luck!

What planet is your GP on? A urin sample can be tested then and there in the surgery. It's not rocket science just very dated. A simple finger prick test would have given him an instant result which would have been a lot more accurate as well.

I have no faith whatsover in Doctors.
i was mis-diagnosed as a type 2 for 5 years!!
i never had a blood test done which would have told them i was type 1 and they never even did a glucose test.
i was tested at the chemist after not eating for 12 hours and i was at 14.8 m/mol. i was 19 years old.

i was on metformin for years at max dose and my weight dropped dramatically but i was still being nagged by the clinic telling me i needed to 'do better'.

my clinic docs arent helpful, very criticising and patronising and frankly i can do without the grief.

i avoid them at all costs unless necessary.

Hi. As carbsrok said your gp could have tested a urine sample in seconds at no cost to the NHS. It was how my diabetes specialist (!) GP confirmed my diabetes. He just took a stick out of the can and dipped it in the urine sample; hey presto it was way over the limit. Two years before my diagnosis I applied to be a drugs tester candidate with one of the well-known drug companies and had a medical which showed no blood sugar problems with a fasting sample, then 2 years later......I would go to your local pharmacy and get a test done.
