DUK conference - Self Management

It is a sad fact that unless you have access to the internet and/or to other diabetics you can not access any information on personal experience which is worth far more than most other things. Granted we are all different and what suits one does not suit all but when we have access to a forum such as this we are able find out about different approaches and to try them for ourselves and see the effect and suitability for our own unique body.

One size does not fit all as the NHS seems to indicate with its nonsensical guide to eat plenty of starchy carbohydrates. If you are discouraged from testing you have no way of knowing what this is doing to your body and in this instance ignorance is not bliss it is another step on the way to a miserable future with an even more damaged body.

I have found such a wealth of information and support on this forum which has helped me to withstand pressure from caring people who thought that either the NHS must be right or that they knew all the answers. Most of them were utterly genuinely trying to help but completely unaware that what they were advocating would make matters so very much worse.

The skewing of statistics is due to the NHS dietary advice and not to those of us struggling to deal with the consequences of diabetes in our own bodies. There will always be people who shut their eyes to their condition and refuse to deal with it even if they do get the right advice but the rest of us should not be penalised for their attitude.

And yes, I too sometimes wonder if it is a job protection programme for HCPs!

My latest blood test etc results have just been given.

HbA1c - 5.9 (41)
Chol - 4.8
HDA - 1.52
LDA - 2.85
trig - 1.1
bp 129/75
kidney function - GFR - 64 (same as 3 years ago)

Dr is very pleased, & assures me there is no adverse effect from my low carb diet. He said he wished he could convince his Indian diabetic relatives to cut their rice & roti consumption.

I showed him the DUK diet leaflet & was horrified.
