Hi All
Have been type 1 diabetic since 1976 and never had car licence refused due to being type 1, at the grand old age of 54 I have decided to try a new line of work and have applied for my provisional lgv class 2 licence. Have had two medicals with my doctor, filled out declaration medical re 3 months of blood tests etc etc and am now awaiting appointment with independent diabetic specialist to see what his opinion is. I am now concerned that if I am not able to have my class 2 will this affect my car/motorcycle licence although I have never been refursed and am am much better controlled now that I was in the past, hba1C single figures very few attacks, lost weight and have no related problems with eyes ,feet or heart.
Can anyone shed any light on this as dvla seemed to suggest that my normal licence could be revoked !!!!

Regards and appreciate your help. Stay healthy

a car license will only be revoked if you have had 2 or more severe hypos requiring help from another individual..........

the LGV/PCV licenses are the same but the risk to others if you crash is much greater, hence all the checks.........

so I would be confident in saying that if you were unsuccessful in getting a license for the larger vehicles your car license would still be perfectly safe......

things are changing all the time with the rules and regulations and I have not been keeping up to date so other opinions/experiences would be good....

@bingopaul
bear in mind that if you have a 3 year class 1, your class 2 will still be 1 year and given DVLA's efficiency on renewals you could be left waiting for your independent diabetic specialist/ophthalmology rechecks at annual re-licence time with BOTH licences suspended. (As ex mod Mo found this year) Not good if you need to use your class 1!

Sorry Meant TYPE 1(A,B,F,G,H) and TYPE2 (C,D). Problem is that they aren't timeous in sending out renewals, then require external examinations which are NOT local and may be a long time in the future! result NO (any)licence for a period

Hi sorry for delay
Is there anyone out there that has been through this medical minefield before and could shed any light on this.

many thanks
Paul

@Dibbles1
Mo the ex mod would tell you it would as the DVLA tie them together so a delay in getting your LGV renewal stops your normal driving.

Just going through the process of renewing my Class 2 licence. In my experience I have found that as long as you can provide the 3 months of monitoring on your test machine and you haven't had any hypos that needed assistance you should be OK. My licence expired last year and I needed it when travelling to Ireland and rang the DVLA who sent me a letter saying my licence was still valid whilst they were processing the renewal. I saw my normal consultant for the initial assessment and was then sent to an independent consultant at a nearby hospital for the second part. You should make sure you know the relevant levels your blood sugar should be at before driving, what to do when driving (how long before you stop and retest), what to do if you feel slightly hypo etc. Good luck, it took me 6 months to get my C & D categories back.

Hi paul , intrested how you went on? Thinking of a job change driving is something I've always wanted to do , however been a type 1 it's been unobtainable till recent .. any more feedback of how this turned out would be much appreciated.
Thanks paul
