DVLA Diabetes Assessment with Doctor

Hi All,

Has anyone had one of these recently? And if so, what does this test entail?

The letter sent by the DVLA informs me to simply book an appointment with my doctor, mentions nothing about three months worth of meter results as stated on other sources...

Is anyone able to tell me what I should expect?

Is this for for renewal for ur 3 yr licence or has dvla picked you adhoc to review.

The dvla and consultants and gps can check any piece of equipment supplied to you to monitor your blood levels.
Any HCP as I understand the law and governance of our licences can check any equipment we use at any time.

They can also 'question' our hba1c levels.. If they are too low.. They are entitled to ask whether hypo's are being recognised...

They can for example ask ' what hours we work' and check back in iur records to make sure we are testing before we drive etc....

These are the worst examples I believe of what to expect...
But.. In my blood diary I have notes for everyday, every test and what I eat etc.. And proof that I am safe driving and do everything that is required ie testing and hypo awareness...

After almost losing licence previously, I am more aware than most of the specifics to keep my licence... It still doesnt stop my HCP's 'mentioning my licence and livelihood' everytime I see them...

The form for Hcp's to complete used to be a tick box 30 months ago.. Don't know what it is now due to the EU regs...

Hello donnellysdogs,

it's been sparked as I've just informed them that I am an Insulin user. They've written to me stating that they want an assessment done by my GP.

That's cool, sounds fair. Although I don't use the meter supplied, but they supply me test strips for the meter I use. So I'll bring that :)

Lastly, thank you, that was very helpful.

I think so long as you are hypo aware and do everything you can to keep yourself safe... And others.. And can prove it.. If required that licenses should be renewed.. But as you will see on this forum .. If you search 'dvla' there has been some horrendous problems experienced by forms completed incorrectly etc..

Everybody should be aware that now it is a requirement to test before driving.. Wheras years previous it wasnt written on the dvla form.. It is now and you are signing to say that you will. Most people do.... But some dont.

If you are under a consultant at a hospital.. They used to write to them, But only write to gp if under gp care.

The dvla also pays gps and consultants to do a report on the patient.. Which was about 8 tickboxes.. When diagnosed, what insulin, is addreess and date of birth correct etc and they would get minimal payment for this. If they do a fuller report.. The HCP's can charge more money... At least that is what I saw on my consultants letter 3 years ago... But that may well have changed now too!!

I think HCP's have to be sure for the sake of their own jobs as well that when they sign people as being fit to drive.. That they are...

My last consultant 3 years ago was just going to sign letter without seeing me... I insisted I was there when he signed the form...
Then when renewed this year, it was renewed without sny HCP involvement..

Good luck... Being new to Insulin.. Just make sure you always test before driving and have a ready supply of sweets available within easy access.. Not in hr glovebox.
