Early morning BG

Hi all,

Just joined site and finding it really useful. I have recently come of all meds to have a trial with diet and exercise. Have been trying out for the past few days, a reduced carb diet (about 100/day). Already my BGs seem to be improving. I have only started testing my BG in the last few weeks as I have spent 2 years burying head in sand. What I have noticed is that every morning my BG is between 7-8. I have read that this may be attributed to the dawn phenomenon and have read a little about it. I am looking for advice on what I can do about it, if anything? Is it just a naturally occuring phenomena that I have to put up with? Does a consisitent morning BG between 7-8 mean that I may have to go back on meds? I really want to stay off meds if I can but will obviously take them if neccessary.

Thanks for the help, feel so much more reassured that I am not on my own and that help is available since I joined this site.

Hi Jen.

You said:

The morning Fasting Bg level you should try and aim for is between 4 to 7 mmol/l.
If you are consistenty getting the higher figures it may well be down to the Dawn Phenomenon or could be down to what you perhaps ate the night before. This too has an effect. Have you tried testing just before bedtime and then again first thing. See what the figures are ?

How early morning, Jen? I find I am 5-6 in the night - up to about 8, & it drifts up on fasting blood test mornings - up to about 7.

You need an early morning reading, followed by a further reading an hour later. A reading of 7-8 is likely to be from supper, rather than dawn effect.

In the olden days, before reduced carb, I had overnight readings around 7, now around 5.5.

I have morning readings consistently around the 8 mark. What I eat the evening before has no relevence, nor does a low carb OR carby snack last thing at night. It's a ******. I find if I have my low carb / no carb breakfast and test again after approx 2 hours the level is back down to 5-ish. Bizarre.

Hi viv.

A little confused as to why you say, what you eat the night before has no relevance to your morning Bg figures ? :?

Ken.

Thanks for replies.

I have been eating an oatcake before bed at approx 12mn.

Will try doing BG last thing at night and early morning. I am usually up by 7am at latest, 6am if working.

Today, morning BG 7.7, post breakfast 2hrs 8.6. All I had was:
2 ryvita & hoummus

Hi Ken

What I mean is, I have monitored what I am eating for my evening meal, conducting my usual BG tests, plus testing before bed, at which time the readings hver around the 5 - 5.5 level; so I know that whatever the effect of my evening meal, my levels are once again normal (for me anyway!).
Yet each morning, BG is back up to around 8.

I'm not really a late night snack person, but I have tried these too, both low carb and regular snacks, and have not yet found one which affects in any way the morning reading. I no longer conduct these 'snack tests' because like I mentioned, I'm not keen on eating right before bed anyway). I have also tested in the early hours with nice low readings, but this is only if I happen to wake, I'm not setting an alarm for it.

So, if I'm eating my evening meal between 6 - 7pm, and me BG readings have levelled out to normal before I go to bed (and during the night) how can anything eaten still be affecting my levels 12 hours later?

Oh yes, incidentally, I rise at 6.10 each morning...naturally.

Yes. You are right. I did also mention the DP earlier.
It's just that for most people it does have relevance ? I know it does with me.

The other thing is if, how shall I say - activity takes place during the Night,
that too can have great relevance !

As for your half a bottle of Red - I'm with you on that one. :D
Let me know when you 'crack' another bottle, if they let me out I'll be round. :)

Thanks for that viv.
I think yours must obviously be down to the DP then.

Ken.

Very welcome.
Incidentally, when discussed with my DN, her answer was "Well, 8's not bad is it?)
If you need me, I'll be the one banging my head against a brick wall. :D

Charles & Camilla were 'just good friends', and look what was going on behind THOSE closed doors!

Should I buy a hat now??

I think maybe I have dug a big enough hole here..............now's the time to use it to escape. :)

Gone for Lunch. ..................
