Eat carbs..yes/no?

It's almost impossible to eat no carbs, but try and get as low as you can and see the effects it has on your blood sugars.

I aim for about 30 a day and if I really pulled my finger out think I could get lower than that.

You will need to replace them with fat and protein and try and take most of your carbs from green vegetables. The low-carb section here will give you a lot of things to think about.

Carbohydrates are not your friends.

I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and reduced my carb intake to below 50g. I did this to aid my weight loss and to date have lost 18 pounds. My blood glucose levels are now normal. It may be that the weight loss has brought these blood glucose levels down or the reduction in carb intake.

Either way I have had no ill effects of reducing my carbs but will not know the impact of carbs until I reach my target weight and start to increase them again.

What I do not intend to do is to increase the carbs to previous levels and will look to hold the carb intake to around 150g per day.

I am not currently on medication and hope to stay this way with good weight and carb control.

I think the last two posters have said it all, but do get hold of a meter so you can know the effect of any foods 2 hours after a meal and adjust carbs accordingly. Always have low-GI carbs if you can when you do have carbs.

The choice is yours. It lies between eat carbs/take more medication and have erratic control and eat less carb/use less medication and have smoother control.
Some people choose the higher carb route, for their own reasons. I went low carb several years ago. I've not had to increase my Metformin from 2 x 500mg per day and my Hb a1c remains in the 5s.
I don't find it difficult. It's become habit to avoid high carb foods altogeher and to eat very small portions of all foods.
It does take a bit of committment and planning.

It's a personal choice. I choose Lo Carb as I don't need meds then. If I go over 50g a day I find that for at least a week my readings go over 7.0 and I hate that. Lo carb allows me to stay stable under 6.5.

Thanks for the advise. I guess its horses for courses. Swmbo advises I get a diet plate :? tbh I did not know such a thing excisted.

Diet plates are a waste of time in my opinion; and also strike me as something particularly infantile; we're adults - who wants a piece of (ugly) crockery frowning at our dietary choices?

Diet plates also don't deal with the issue here which is carbohydrate consumption; the traditional diet plate/food pyramid actually needs to be turned on its head if you are low carbing.

Give low-carbing a go for at least 2 weeks and see how it makes your feel and see what it does to your blood sugars.
