Eating Fruits for Diabetic type 1

Bless you, I think your son may have already worked out and noticed what some fruits have done to his levels before so avoids them. Taking extra insulin just to eat fruit is a no brainer, I used to love my fruit and based my breakfast around it with yogurt until I found out about dr Bernstein’s low carb lifestyle. Since then I’ve not eaten one piece of fruit. Get all my goodness from vegetables, nuts, seeds and salad stuff like lettuce, cucumber, green bell peppers, spring opinions and rocket. No vitamin or mineral deficiency either, in fact all the eggs I now eat haven’t effected my cholesterol and have my b12 levels right up there. Never felt better either.
Your post is very helpful to me. What about non-veg.....are you eating some chicken or not.....what about chicken liver....I heard it helps in blood clotting if injured

I’m glad you’ve found it helpful. I eat chicken, beef, pork, bacon, sausage. All meat really except thumper, bambi and game.

Our food choices are endless, there are loads of sugar free alternatives we can make. The shop brought ones can be a bit misleading so we need to always pay attention to labels, only shop brought sugar free item I eat is hartleys sugar free jelly. Sugar can be hidden in so many forms it can be tricky to start with. I found out most of what I know from being on here and reading dr Bernstein’s book a diabetes solution. He also had a diabetes university which is a free YouTube channel with everything we need to know straight from a type one diabetic who is thriving at 84 years old. If you want to make some nice sweet treats for your son I have a few recipes on a little website I built called it won’t diabeat us, will link you up T the bottom. Try not to worry about your son too much he seems to be doing a lot right just from what little I’ve read. :)

Here is the link to his YouTube channel.

That was my introduction to his methods. I was hooked on him straight away. Then I got his book which I have on my kindle app as it was the fastest and cheapest way to get my hands on it. Was perhaps the best £6.99 I’ve ever spent apart from my glucose monitor. I will link you to his site. I got the kindle version through amazon. If you want the hard copy you can get it direct from his site http://www.diabetes-book.com/

Always pop back if you ever want any help, if I can’t provide it one of the lovely members or moderators from here will soon have an answer or advice on what’s best.

I really appreciate your kindness. I will go through all the details that you have sent. Yes I will come back if I will need some help:) Thanks again.

Nope, all a lot more than 10g carbs, and full of fructose, which is another type of sugar. This will cause rapid rise in blood sugar in some people. You really need to test at 1 and 2 hours after eating to see how they affect your blood glucose. It may be that it isn't affected much, but it may also cause a large rise, we are all individuals.
....but fructose works very slowly in the body. I once went on a fruit only diet and had half as much insulin as normal dose meant I had recurring hypos. Asked doc about it & emphasised that I had exactly the same cho in fruit rather than eating other types of cho, such as bread and potatoes, he stated that it was due to the amount of time it takes to absorb fruit sugar/ carbohydrate from fruit

Hello again..... how are you today......hope all is good. Yesterday I just saw the first introduction video and I felt so nice. My hope became even more stronger. If a person can survive from the time when there were no morden equipments and become such a successful personality, then our generation has great chance ahead. My one simple question is that after introduction should I see the next video that says discussion 2 ......I don't want to miss anything, so if you can guide me how to see videos chronologically Thank a lot.

I am avoiding fruits too because it spikes up my blood sugar particularly banana, orange, water melon and co. Whenever my hypo is going haywire and banana is within my reach, two fruits of banana send the hypo packing.

Sorry, it's sugar and it absorbs just as quickly. Also different fruits have different fructose content. Bananas and other tropical fruit such as mangoes, papaya, pineapple etc are much higher in fructose. Also fruits tend to have more fructose as they ripen.

Obviously different fruits have different cho/ fruit sugar content--that was one of the 1st things I learnt as an 8 year old (57 years ago) after having been diagnosed as type 1 and administering insulin, for example a 10g banana is very small whereas a 10g apple or orange tend to be medium sized. Can also remember (re fruit diet I talked about previously) eating 30g cho of banana and having a hypo during a meeting immediately afterwards. Through practical experience I would say that doc was correct re fruit sugar working very slowly. The only exception, I have found is orange which will even correct a hypo. Also definitely depends on bm before the meal ie bm 4 (which is what I aim for before meals) and fruit only, hardly makes any difference to the bm which is why, on a fruit only diet, insulin injected before each meal needs to be reduced drastically. BM 8+ and tend to go quite high but it does take a long time (so in meantime a high level of physical activity will bring the blood sugar down). Are you a type 2 on insulin? How much cho do you eat for each meal?

You will of course also realise, particularly if you take insulin, that glucose, sugar or a sweet will act instantaneously to correct a hypo whereas a medium slice of bread at 15/ 16 g (2/3 oz) will take considerably longer to bring the bm back up, even though it has 3 times the amount of cho than contained in a teaspoon of sugar (5g), 2 glucose tabs (6g) or a boiled sweet (circa 5g).

Yes T2 on insulin, drastically reduced now due to low carb diet. But I find I am so carb sensitive that I can eat very little carbohydrate of any kind without my blood sugar shooting up. Less than 10g carbs each meal, and sometimes even that's too much.
