Exactly how important is to have to eat first thing in the mornings? as I really cannot face food untill at least midday.
I have tried for the last 5 weeks but have got to where I was before, never hungry on wakening.
I will have say mackeral or sardines around lunch time, then something between 4 and 5pm.
All I have in the mornings is a cup of tea as I feel sick for about an hour after taking my medication.
I know we are supposed to take our tablets with food but as I have said I just cannot manage it, so I guess feel sick with food and without makes no difference am going to feel it anyway.

Hi Suffolkboi :)

Have you tried something like a smoothie, just take yoghurt and some berries and blitz them. It is delicious and will at least give you something in your tum. 8)

Suffolkboi,

They say the best meal of the day is breakfast, but I think it is down to personal choice. Sometimes I skip breakfast and wait until lunch time to eat, every other day I do this. The feeling of being sick after taking meds could be due to taking them on a empty stomach, is it possible to take these meds after lunch when you have eaten?

This may not be possible, as I don't know much about the meds you are on, but if you are happy to skip breakfast and don't feel the need to eat, I wouldn't worry to much about it. As always, if you are not sure of anything with regards to your diabetes control or meds taken, have a chat with your gp or dsn.

It depends on what and whether you have any medication in the morning. If you are diet only, not eating isn't an issue.
I have a 500mg Metformin in the morning and my usual breakfast if hurrying out to the gym, is a chunk of cheese.( about 40g) I go to the gym for 8:00am3 days a week.
If I have more time, I scramble 2 eggs. I'm not hungry, just know I should eat.

my meds in the morning are ..

Aspirin 75mg Blood thinning
Lansoprazole 30mg Stomache
Mebeverine 135mg IBS
Bisoprozol 5mg Heart
Metformin 500mg Diabetes
Gliclazide 80mg Diabetes

Normally all I have in the morning is a cup of tea.

Hi suffolkboi,

I was told that eating regularly is needed to keep your blood sugars on an even keel.
With regard to the medication, please do not alter the timing unless your G.P. is in agreement.

Synonym suggested a shake, could you manage that? I know what you mean about not fancying anything and it is difficult. This is the one meal of the day that I do not always enjoy. As you are low carbing then perhaps search the low carb forum and see if there is anything there.

Catherine.

When I was ill a few weeks back my DN said that because I was taking gliclizide I still had to eat after taking it - whatever I could manage.

I take 500g met and 80 glic in the morning and evening before my breakfast and dinner.

I am like you and never can eat when I get up - I get up at 6 am but don't have my breakfast until 8ish and I take my meds then. Have whatever you fancy it doesn't have to be food you associate with breakfast time - anything that you consider good in your low carb regime would be fine - can't help you on that as I don't strictly low carb but eat to my meter.

Hope you can get something worked out I may be totally wrong but I thought if you are taking hypo inducing tabs that you had to eat after taking them - but like I say this may be wrong - best speak to your GP or DN if you can

Thx all for the advice, will try the smoothie in the morning, my problem is I usuall wake at around 5/6am and am definately not hungry that time of the morning.
And by the time it would normally be breakfast time I am still not hungry.
But tomorrow is a new day, so along with that I have bought some wellbeing one a day multivitamins to help boost what ever I lose being on a low carb diet.

I wouldn't chance going without breakfast on gliclazide.
that's too big a risk of hypo.

Well has been 5 days being back in old habits of not eating (except for niblets of cream crackers) untill dinner time around 1500/1600 and highest bs has been in that time is 6.6.

I am so determined to lose another 3 stone, which is why I dont eat so much now, as the minute I eat something I feel bloated and feel as if my belly is sticking out to much.

Hi Suffolk :)

Don't want to alarm you but an attitude to food like that isn't really a normal or healthy one - not eating until that late in the day will not help you lose weight - your body will go into stavation mode and conserve fat rather than shed it sounds silly I know - the bloated feeling you are getting is probably from the not eating rather than the eating - your whole system will be on go slow.

Maybe you should chat to your GP about how you are feeling - it's very easy to get too obsessed when we have to plan our life around what we eat - believe me I know :(

Maybe setting regular meal times would help - and as you are on Gliclizide you are taking a big risk of having a hypo - been there too!

We are here to help when we can and give our advice but sometimes we do need the help of someone more qualified - good luck hun - I know how difficult it is to get this food thing in perspective

Hi Suffolk, :)

That is good advice from lovinglife. Your body will go into famine mode and you may even put weight on if you don't eat carefully.

Do you test your blood sugar when you wake? What are your levels like? High sugar tends to turn off the appetite. If you have high morning readings maybe your DSN/doctor can adjust your meds, correcting the blood sugar may make you feel more like eating in the morning. Aspirin on an empty stomach isn't a good idea either.
