Eating out

I used to love eating out but now I feel like such a pain in the bum every time I eat out.
Not only do I need to check for diabetes suitable foods but as I'm gluten free I just struggle so much! I'm meeting a friend tomorrow and she wants to go to a cafe - I can't think of anywhere more tricky to manage diabetes and GF!

As I haven't seen her for 9 years, I don't want to start out first catch up in ages with 'sorry I'm diabetic and GF, can we go somewhere else please?'

I know I'll end up just sitting there not eating...
Any suggestions?
Xx

Why not meet at Starbucks or something and just have a coffee or something ! Maybe after a while you can casually bring it up in conversation ? If not, can you have a salad or something ? I'm sure your friend will understand ;-)

Why not offer to make a reservation at someplace you know serves suitable food?

Friends often appreciate someone planning a meal out and you then can choose a restaurant that works for you. If you don't want to explain then all you need tell anyone is that the food is good. If you know more than one suitable restaurant you can offer a choice.

What's the worst that can happen, that they might expect you to make reservations for every meal you have together?

Thanks guys, we're meeting halfway between hers and mine in a place I don't know well - Ilkley. She knows if a nice cafe there, hence why we're going to the cafe. I'll be taking my daughter too and to make things even more tricky - she has an allergy to dairy.

In future I think I will offer to book places to meet people, gives me a bit more control over my meals that way.
I'm sure she'd be fine with it if I explained why, just don't want to break the ice with 'hi, I'm diabetic'!

Xx

Well if you know the place your meeting give the place a ring ask them if they have diabetic and gf meals I am sure they won't mind telling you look on line if they have a website or Facebook page there might be a menu

Are you on Insulin? If so forget about 'diabetes suitable foods' just eat whatever you like, ensure you're not exceeding your daily calorific intake and bolus up!

I don't follow low carb/other diets (unless I specifically want to lose fat fast), the NHS advice isn't all that bad, to be fair you're just injecting what your body would of made anyway (Insulin)...

I pretty much eat whatever I want (portions within reason) and I have good blood sugar control, within healthy BMI and facing no diabetic related issues...I also exercise regulary I find that helps control blood sugars and I can eat whatever I want without needing 'lots' of Insulin...
