Eating to the meter

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I've just ccome across this idea. apparently it's taught by some American specialist doctors. You test BG BEFORE eating and then adjust your meal to make sure your 1 hour BG doesn't go above 7( the damage tipping point)
It makes sense, but I bet the idea gets rubbished by the consultants and the PCTs.

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Good idea ,Hana ,but that would take some experience ,I would think to be able to do that.

I can imagine the more experienced who have calculated out the amount and the effects of certain meals could do this easily, but for a newbie to diabetes it would take some time.

"Eat to your meter" has been the mantra on the newsgroup alt.support.diabetes since 1999

Jennifer came up with her standard advice to newbies, which can be found here http://www.diabetic-talk.org/jennifer.htm

this isn't what the Dr's in the US tell you to do, it's what diabetics across the world have done to gain control of their diabetes

having said that, my endo is NOW telling me to test 2 hour pp once or twice a week, or for a 'new meal'

testing this extensively isn't done forever, only while you are learning how different foods affect you, then you cut back on your testing

i can give you a modified version of Jennifer's advice if you would like

The standard prescription at the moment is 50 strips a month. However by telling my doctor that I wanted to test after meals to find out where a 'spike ' was in my BS I got 100 for one month.Worth trying if you want to test how each meal is going by your meter.

i now people in the UK who get their strips directly from the manufacturer for 15 pounds for 50 strips

others get their strips on e-bay (check the expiration date!) for about 10 pounds for 50 strips

for the first 6 years of diabetes, i had to pay for strips myself, insurance didn't cover them.... but it does now :)

Hi,
I wish I had been given the advice when first diagnosed, I'm sure I would not have blindly followed the dietary advice given by the NHS as I did till I found this forum.
