Effect of long term keto on HA1C

I've had enough coffees, and am well-fed, so I have been concentrating hard on what you are reporting on insulin senstivity and a low carb way of eating. (Even zero carb re the carnivore...).

I may have missed it above, but you got this from Prof Bikman online? Is that right? That people with normal blood glucose regulation (which is you, you lucky thing you) (Not surprising you are going to get that response in a diabetes forum :)), you can lose insulin sensitivity from consistently eating low-carb?

I have not come across this idea before, I must admit. My understanding was that less insulin circulating actually increases insulin senstivity. But I haven't come across type two diabetics, ie with actual malfunctioning blood glucose systems, who have dangerously low levels of circulating insulin. Tell me more! Yes, a very interesting subject.

Now I’m confused! - idon’t think I said that a type 2 diabetic could have low levels of insulin- I thought I’d said the opposite - you can have elevated insulin but normal glucose levels

Sorry what happened there?! Argh my morning coffee has worn off… anyway … type 2 diabetics have insulin resistance ie high levels of insulin and high blood glucose. I am not diabetic nor prediabetic (despite my doctor suggesting I may be!) - yes my blood glucose is slightly elevated but by insulin is low, and the HOMA IR came out at 0.75 - so no insulin resistance or anywhere near. Interesting discussion with Ben Bikman and Ken Berry on this topic. Episode from 26 Aug 2024.

There does seem to be a phenomenon of people who have gone very low carb or carnivore who were lean to start with and not diabetic or prediabetic that have had to reintroduce a few carbs due to going too far the other way and having very low insulin levels of 1-2 which is probably not healthy long term. Listened to Dr Rob Cywes - the carb addiction doc podcast this morning about that - episode 428 on YouTube.

Ben Bikman has a podcast called the Metabollic Classroom (available on Spotify and YouTube) loads of very useful and explanatory episodes on there, would high recommend.

Ah! OK. It's very very very unusual to have someone with no blood glucose and insulin issues talking about a low carb healthy fat way of eating on this Forum :-). Too low insulin or healthy insulin levels, and healthy BG levels - I'm very happy for you. Limited audience on this Forum though? I would say? :-). But it's been nice online-meeting you, for sure.

I did go to the HeartUK cholesterol event yesterday.
Will do a full report on a thread when I've had time to write it.
Summary: free cholesterol testing with breakdown, instant results. Also weight and body breakdown on smart scales.
Presentation mainly about losing weight, cutting fats, taking statins.
Questions wide and varied but difficult to hear.
Audience seemed informed. And, surprisingly, all of "healthy weight", ie no obvious obesity.
Sponsored by Benecol, so grabbed some free samples and leaflets, (yet to read them)

I thought it was a local event but turns out they are only doing 5- 6 across the country. Birmingham and London have been done. Berkshire and Cornwall to come.

Well if they were promoting statins and cutting fats … ‍♀️ I’ve just read The Great Cholesterol Con by Dr Malcolm
Kendrick and look forward to reading the next one The Clot Thickens.
