Hi all, just a couple of quick questions with regard to certain foods:

Eggs, I do love a poached egg on toast..are these still ok and if so how many a week is ok.
I enjoy the occasional glass of red wine, what fruits are really good for diabetes and can I snack on fruit when I like?? Also what veges are better than others for blood sugar control?

I have so many questions and when I think of some more I will post.

Thanks so much,

Sandra

Hi Sandra. Eggs are no problem - eat as many as you like. The toast is more problematic. We eat burgen soya and linseed quite a lot. Low carb and low GI. If you can't get it, multigrain is not too bad. But only one slice maybe - no bread is that good. Red wine is not a problem. I had a nice bottle of Rioja tonight!
Fruit is variable. Berries are the best- any berries. Strawberries, raspberries, anything. Most of us can't handle bananas. High carbs and GI. ALL fruit has carbs though by way of fructose so it's not a "free" food.
Green veg is mainly ok. Old potatos aren't so good, boiled new potatos are about best from a spud point of view, but not too many. Parsnips are high in carbs. Overall, veg that grows above ground is safer than veg that grows below ground.

Hi Grazer, thanks for your quick reply. We get Burgen breads down here as well. I prefer the wholemeal than any other. When we talk about bread how many slices a day is ok? It is a shame about the banana's as I love this and we have them in abundance..

I am all over the place with this diagnosis and I wonder will I ever get over feeling so sad and sorry for myself...I could cry when I think that I may never be able to enjoy a piece of fried fish or a yummy pie again..I love thai and indian and dont know where to start...I am only 43 and I think how the hell am I going to manage this for the rest of my life???

Thanks for allowing me to vent

Sandra

It'snot as bad as you think.
Number of slices - you need to find out first how many carbs a day in total you can handle, and factor the bread into that, although 2 slices a day is max for me and many others. Watch the type of bread. Wholemeal is not much better than white. Multigrain is better. But the Burgen Soya and Linseed has the lowest carbs per slice and is low GI.
Settle on a starting number of carbs - say, 50% of norm for a woman. Thats 125 a day. Look at nutrition guides on packets, and on internet for carb content for loose foods (remember, all fruit has carbs too) Divide your food up to fit the 125 grams. Then test 2 hours after eating various different meals. If you get readings above, say, 7.8 mmols/l (a figure lots of us use) then you had too many carbs in that meal, or the carbs were too starchy. So adjust for next time. In the end, you'll work out a number of carbs, and what types of food, suit you. You may have to cut the numbers further; some are on less than 70grams a day, others on about 30. Or you may be able to handle more. I manage well on 150 to 180 a day. You can only find out by testing. It all sounds terribly complex, but you soon get used to it and nowadays I don't test much - I know what I can eat and what I cant.
You don't need to go without those treats either.
I have a lot of fried fish, but I fry it without batter or breadcrumbs. I sometimes get fish from the fish and chippy but throw the batter away (REALLY difficult that one! )
I have Indian food, but not too much rice. make sure you have pilau rice in the restaurant, or if you have it at home use Basmati. Don't overcook the rice - it makes it more starchy which raises our blood sugar quicker. No Nan bread, but I have a small chapati. A glass or two of red wine helps to keep the BG down with that meal!
Don't have Thai unless you cook it yourself. Too much batter, and the sticky rice is the worst of the lot.
I have pies, home made. I use carbquick or carbalose flour from the low carb megastore (on-line) It says 80% less carbs. Don't know if it is, but it certainly doesn't raise my BG hardly at all. Some think it tastes a bit odd, but I don't mind it. Bit expensive, but who cares if I can eat PIE! Others use almond flour and stuff, they prefer the taste, but I'm no good at all that so i stick to the easy solution.
Look on the low carb diet forum on this site - loads of ideas on there!

As many as you can eat. Eggs are one of the most nutritious things that you can eat. As Grazer says, it's the toast that is the problem.

It all depends on what your carbohydrate tolerance is like, but personally I steer clear of fruit apart from small portions of berries, which I try to eat with cream. Snacking on fruit will greatly increase your daily carb count. Why don't you make some sugar free jellies, and snack on those instead?

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies!! I really appreciate the input..

And Carol, that food sounds fantastic...I will try the celeriac and swede mash as I love mashed potatoes. This morning I had a wholemeal muffin with two poached eggs, was yummy. I have not got my meter yet as only diagnosed last week. When I had gestational diabetes 10 years ago and followed the low GI diet I felt the best i have ever felt. Just wish I could have kept it up then maybe I would not be here today, that makes me sad. I guess in time I will get used to the change.

Lovely to hear from all of you, it has really helped me these last few days

Eggs on a bed of spinach is good. The French are fond of eggs on top of a salad too. Better than the toast. I'm eating loads of cheese omelettes for breakfast at the moment. This is a Luxury diet!

Bananas.
I live in the Philippines and of course they are readily available. However you can buy bananas in almost any state of ripeness. Under ripe bananas taste OK and are not too bad on the sugar scale. Ripe bananas are worse and overipe bananas are full of sugar. so if you have a choice on the state of ripeness of the bananas then you should be OK. In countries which import bananas, sorry but they are timed to be shipped so that when you buy them they are ripe.
Boiling bananas are also OK. ( OK I didn't know they existed until I came here )

Eggs - I eat a minimum of a dozen eggs a week. They are really nutritious. How many you eat depends whether you believe discredited 1970s research about cholesterol or not.
Toast - the whole bread thing depends upon which side of the carb fence you're on.
Fruit - I suggest you let your meter be your guide. Blueberries and blackberries spike me, strawberries don't. The GI index website might be useful www.glycemicindex.com
Veg - Check on your meter, you'll most likely find that root veg spike you. Again the GI index can be helpful on that.
Fried fish - you could try breading them with ground sesame seeds if no-one in your family has a nut allergy.
Wine - depends on your drugs firstly. People aren't encouraged to drink when on Metformin for example. but often ignore that. Red wine will send your BG down but only while your liver is ealing with the toxin, ethanol. Red wine isn't carby though so you could slosh it in coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon.

Even better place the fresh fish on some tin foil and sprinkle with herbs and chopped garlic and wrap loosely and place in a hot oven, absolutely delicious without the fat from frying
