I know that this may sound like a strange question, but here it goes. Can people over the age of 70 get diagnosed as type 1 diabetics?
I work in a pub a couple of evenings a week, there is a man that drinks in the pub who is around 75 years of age. He says that he has just been diagnosed type 1. The thing that i find strange is that he has asked people not to tell me. I hear him talking to people in the pub about injecting but he stops if he thinks I can here him. I am type 1. He has also told people that he has diabetes worse than I do. As I haven't discussed the finer points of my condition with him I wonder how he has come to this conclusion, but I am not worried that I am supposedly healthier than him lol.
I always believed that it is younger people who are diagnosed as type 1 although I know that older people are often dignosed.
I am curious as the man's wife is very sick and wonder whether he feels a bit left out.

Don't know if there is an age limit... But it may be he was on tablets as a T2 and thinks that going in to insulin makes him a T1. Had a friend say this to me recently and he in his 60's.... Thought because he gone on to insulin that this made him T1...
Some people always have to be more sick or more ill than others.. It seems like it is a hobby for them.. (Sounds cruel to say it).... But thats the way some people are...he'll be telling you soon that he us more ill because he injects more-lol:)!!

Yes you can be diagnosed as type 1 at any age. There's a lady on another forum who was diagnosed at the age of 73.

Hi, if this man is saying it because he feels left out, then that is just awful, as I wouldn't wish type 1 on anyone. It did use to be a younger condition, but it would seem diabetes has mutated somewhat over the years.
Is he really even type 1 ?It's very sad that his wife is so ill, but he seems to be in the pub and if that were me, I then tbh I wouldn't keep going to the pub !!
If people ask you about type 1 then point them to the internet, as there is a lot of information on the diabetes types and how to manage it.

All the best

You can be diagnosed at any age. It's probably less common over 70, but it definitely happens...

Hi. Yes, you can be diagnosed with late onset T1 at any age. The oldest I've heard of was age 90! If this person is not overweight then he may well be LADA( late onset T1). A proportion of those diagnosed as T2 are in fact LADA and mis-diagnosed like I was at 60.
