Hi,

I’ve been on this medication for some months now and I keep getting thrush repeatedly. I know it’s a side affect but this is getting ridiculous now. Anyone else had this?

Hi,

It is a common side effect I believe. The specialist d nurse said to me it needs treating straight away. I only lasted one week on empagliflozin, I was weeing so much sugar, had yeast in my urine by day 4! Ouch! Stopped it, and had the worst case of thrush I’ve ever experienced. Didn’t wait for a repeat case. It’s the sugar, being in places you wouldn’t normally have sugar! Urine normally contains no sugar I believe. I hope you get it resolved soon. Not fun! I think it is the main reason people stop taking it, shame as it helps bring blood sugars down quite effectively.

Chronic bouts of Thrush was one of the lesser known symptoms of T2 that I had before diagnosis. When you think about it, flushing glucose out through the kidneys via a Flozin is pretty much the same thing.

Edit to add.

Better to lower the amount of glucose in the first place by eating a lower amount of carbohydrates.

I had thrush too that was how I was diagnosed, I didn’t have the symptoms that most diabetics have and still don’t. I’ve never had it since until now with this new medication.

It wasn’t until a few months in of taking empaglaflozin that I had my 1st bout of thrush. It clears then about a week or two later it comes back. I am not weeing any differently than before just about 4 sometimes 5 over a 24 hour period.
