Hi all I've just had a phone call from my hospital and they have given me an Endoscopy appointment for Tuesday 14 th August at 1pm. The lady is sending me information on the procedure and about taking my medication etc. I could have a numbing throat spray or a sedative after a lot of uummming and aarrring I said sedation because I know I will be fretting about the endoscopy and I just want to get it over with as soon as possible. So I cant go to work after that ( boss is not going to be pleased , but my health comes first) and need assisitance to get home, so I will have to organise something very soon. In a weeks time, at least I will know what is going on with my stomach, as I have felt severe upper abdominal pain, more nausea and also feeling so ill, even on the train home last week

Hopefully I will get a proper diagnosis next week and get these awful symptoms sorted out :(

Best wishes RRB

Hi RRB, Not a pleasant test, but not painful or anything worse than uncomfortable. The sedative will help you relax which is half the battle won. Good luck and hope it all goes ok. And you a absolutely right - health does come first

Hi,

I've had a couple of these and settled on the spray first time.. With hindsight I would have had the sedative. Still had to have an escort home though.

You are making a wise decision as others have said, health comes first.

Take care.

Hope it goes well! I've had a few endoscopes in the past and have always gone for the sedative as I am a wimp! It's not a pleasant feeling, but it doesn't hurt. You might get a sore throat afterwards, but it should pass quickly.

Good news - the sedative will make sure you get a great nights sleep... At least that's what happens for me!

I've had an Endoscopy twice before, first time I had the spray and the second time I didn't bother at all, if you are nervous then you are better opting for the sedative.

Hope they find out what is causing your pain and discomfort RRB :)

Hi All.
I had to be sedated some "more" as was attempting to fight the scope going further down my throat and was reflux gagging!!!
They had already put a canula in my arm, to give me some sedation earlier, so it was easy for them to just wack some more sedation into me.
I went weak n floppy fairly quickly and was far more compliant for them to continue to do the test fully...
Was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia 2 weeks later on the results of the test.
It was a unpleasant experience for me till they sedated me more, as I couldnt cope with it comfortably.
If I had to have this again I will DEFINETELY be asking for "sedation" ...
Anna.

I had an endoscopy a few years ago, didn't have the sedation, wasn't the nicest experience so opt for the sedation is my advice!

Thanks guys for your replies. I am definately going to go with the sedative, I don't want to be fighting it or gagging and acting like a wuss in front of medical staff

I have been feeling worse lately and went back to my doctors yesterday, told him what was happenening and also my weight is still
dropping and because of my concerns and the unexplained weight loss, he said he would actually phone the doctor, I don't know if he got around to phoning, but this afternoon, hey presto an appointment. So I'm glad I went to see my doctor again.

A good nights sleep, after the sedative, sounds good to me  RRB

Hi,

I had the spray, I took the advice of the nurse to concentrate on breathing deeply, it worked. It isn't pleasent but over in a few minutes.

Good luck matey. At least you get a result there and then, unless they take samples to test.

Kind regards

Bernie

A big apology from me, I thought I had posted my results, talk about embarrasing  maybe the sedative affected me more than I thought!

The last thing I remember was been given a sedative in my arm and woke up on a table somewhere else. A bit groggy and woosy but wanted to go home straight away. I have Gastritis and Duediomitis, thats inflamation. A biopsy wasn't taken because the dr said everything looked ok down there. I went to see my doctor with the results and he was surprised I didn't have the biopsy because he suspects I could have Coeliac disease ( 2 part blood test, 1st part negative, 2nd part High). My dr has been away on his hols until Wednesday so I will make an appointment to see him, because the next day, after the Endoscopy, I had a Ultrasound scan as well. I am still losing alittle weight each week, and still nauseas, alot. I had to get up early this morning because I felt sick and sat at the table reading my book and sipping tea. Dr has increased the Omeparozle to 40 mg, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I still have upper abdominal pain, but its not so severe now. A male friend had a Endoscopy last week with just the throat spray, he said he was constantly gagging and said how horrible it was and wished he had of gone for the sedation.

Thank you for asking, it was very kind and thoughtful of you. With best wishes RRB

Hi RRB pleased you've got at least a partial diagnosis. Hope you don't have to go through it again for the biopsy. Good luck
